I don't think you are as stupid as this question FWIW.

Morestead punts and kicks kickoffs.

Why can't Tom Brady also play D-Tackle?

If you are a Saints fan, you can easily point to the wasted 1st rd pick Russell Erxleben as a prime example.

Gostkowski stepped in and beasted that ball Sunday

Punter is generally back up kicker if kicker gets injured.
I just made that up. Might be true though.

i think this is probably true for most teams, but the punter simply doesn't have the skill set nor spend them time to make field goals at a clip expected of NFL kickers on any kind of regular basis.

Most punters can kick, but can't hit ~80% of the kicks like kickers do.
Most kickers can punt, but can't punt for 40+ yards like punters do.
Then if you only have one on your roster your special teams would be completely fricked if he got hurt during the game.

Chad Johnson was a backup kicker and did pretty good in the preseason a few years ago when the Bengals primary kicker had to miss a few games due to injury.

Yup. Ryan Allen clammed up after seeing that

I think this is a legit question. You would think there would have been some stud kickers that could do it all. I mean if you have a big leg, surely you could learn both.

But it begs the question, why hasn't there been a guy in the NFL that excels at both? Could be extremely valuable to a team that could use an extra roster spot. You would think there would be some guy out of college that could do both very good.

The designated long snapper seems like a bigger roster spot waste to me.

I may be completely off on this but they need someone smaller and faster to get downfield and make tackles...wouldn't do you any good to have a 300 lb center trying to tackle someone. Plus, don't they have rules about hitting the long snapper? Makes sense why they use someone smaller.
