I can understand why other schools don't want to be confused with Penn State.

To be fair, the nittany lion is a mountain lion, not an African lion.

Edit: I see someone beat me to it.

BYU and Univ. of Houston Cougars. Florida Panthers. This is if we're considering mountain lions as lions.

You do have a point. Too many bulldogs. I mean, there is literally NOTHING cool about a bulldog. What are they good for anyway?

How many "Lion" teams do you want? Seems we have enough shitty ones already.

I'm surprised there is no major team with a dragon mascot. The only team I know that uses one is UAB

Drexel and UIC are D1 schools with dragon mascots off the top of my head, but they're not even as "major" as UAB.

Penn State. Though I still doubt that fracking thing is supposed to be a real lion

real enough

Nittany lion

a mountain lion
Mountain lions had roamed on nearby Mount Nittany until the 1880s.[3]

... The "original" nittany lion can be seen in the Penn State All-Sports Museum as the only known mounted eastern mountain lion. It was killed in Susquehanna County by Samuel Brush in 1856.[4] According to a July 1992 article in National Geographic by Maurice Hornocker titled "Learning to Live with Mountain Lions", "Courthouse records from Centre County, Pennsylvania, show that one local hunter killed 64 lions between 1820 and 1845. During those 25 years an estimated 600 cats were killed in that county alone."

ex post facto, they got in their Deloreans and went back and changed their names so as to be free of taint of Lion.
