When we take our athletes from their families at age three and have them train for 8 hours a day 5 days a week for one purpose and we have the threat of sending their families to labor camps if they don't perform then it will be an even playing field
this is the answer. and they still aren't very athletic. they tend to dominate in the skill events like shooting, ping pong, badminton, etc.

China's enjoying the host nation bump. Host nations almost always do better than usual which for China means competing for the top slot of the medal table.
They also are pretty smart in focusing on sports which the US is not comeptitive in. They are contesting our athletic dominance without going head to head too often.
Look, our athletes are every bit as driven. Phelps' entire life is swimming. In the end, there's not much difference between the elite athletes. It is an all-consuming pursuit of excellence. But it is a shame so many US athletes essentially bankrupt themselves so that we may bask in their reflected glow.

They have had their big events already, they are done. The facat is we excel the most overall, and we should be kicking their arse by the time it comes to a close. Track, basketball, Phelps, etc.

China is not that great in track and field, we will make up whatever we lost then.

You take that Michael Phelps guy out of the equation, and the U.S. is getting embarrassed as far as gold medals go.

The Chinese had most of their best events up first.

Did we even bother to send over any weightlifters?
Hell half of the OT benches 550 lbs.

The US will catch and easily pass when we hit the track.

That the Chinese are stronger and faster than Americans, and have an uncanny ability to synchronize their diving.

A guy from LA was leading in powerlifting last I heard.

Lawls.
Seriously though, looking at the medal count, over half of China's medals come from fencing, shooting, and archery.
Like someone already said, I think it was Slo, they just focus on stuff they know the US doesnt really participate in and rack up tons of medals there.
But we've already surpassed them in the total medal count, and will pass them in the gold medal count in the 2nd week.
Throw in the fact that they're like 3 times bigger population and there athletes train from the age of 3, and yet we still kick there asses, they really cant touch us.

I love the story told a few nights ago about one of the really young looking Chinese female gymnasts who wanted to quit gymnastics and suposedly "her family" encouraged her to stay in the program and said she wouldn't be welcomed home until after the Olympics.
And by "her family" they meant the government threatened to feed her whole family to Michael Phelps if she refused.
Its so sad that these kids are taken that early and are basically used as political pawns. You have to wonder what live becomes for those who go through the program their entire life but don't win medals and fame.

Even for those with medals and fame, it must suck.
