And? We're a week into the Olympics.

I never said we weren't going to finish above them. You asked why this thread is started/why we want to fund more Olympic centers.

Its because the rest of the world is really good.

Thank you! Our elite athletes do so because they have the talent, the drive, and most importantly the desire to succeed.

Do we really need a state-run push to get kids to excel in table tennis and badminton? What's wrong with people playing sports for the love of the game and potentially competing in the Olympics doing what they love?

No one is talking about pushing people into this.

We are just talking about funding places so that our athletes don't have to work another job and simply train in their off time.

Understood, but I don't understand why this should be funded by government dollars. I think that it's appropriate for such centers to continue being privately funded.

This is just an observation of mine. When watching the competitions, our athletes look like they are out there having fun while the Chinese look like they are out there merely performing their duty to the nation of China. They don't find any satisfaction unless they win. Anything less than perfection, for the Chinese, is unacceptable.

A great example of that is the Chinese men's gymnastics coach who said that he would throw himself off of a tall building because he would rather die than win the silver medal.

my concern is debt the athletes may have primarily. especially if they finish the olympics.

big sports such as basketball and tennis dont have to worry about this. but people who are wrestlers for instance all they may do after their career is to teach none other than wrestling. I just dont think they should have to pay an expensive debt. once they get to an elite level it should be a priviledge to where they get treated similarily to other professional athletes (not paid millions) but compensated in other ways besides winning a gold medal.

They do have the defending gold medalist Liu Xiang running the 110m hurdles. We need to take him out.
