Then why has the USA won the medal count for how many Olympics in a row??
Not to mention, these children are often removed from their family home around 3-5 years old to engaged in an intensive training regiment. They only see their families once or twice a year. Elite athletes here at least have some semblance of a normal life.

and there are no olympic athletes for the US team that does not use HGH?
Posted on 8/14/08 at 8:27 pm to TheEdge
there is something called olympic training centers which if our government ever paid for and not have the athletes rely on sponsors we'd win a lot more medals than now.

Agreed.
The point right now, though, is that the Chinese athletes can afford to train continuously for these games. The American athletes. Not so much.

true.
i think our government should sponsor these centers like the Chinese do theirs. not to mention other programs that can help defeat/prevent the obesity epidemic.

Well without the forcible removal at age 3 and lack of a choice about whether or not you want to quit the program...

I don't think you would get many volunteers to give up their lives for Olympic Medals (training from such a young age, their entire lives and all). Genetically, I would say the average American is far more athletic then the average Chinese person.

I know it was a joke.
Really the fact that they do this and no one seems to give a shite just kind of pisses me off.

It is child abuse IMO.

I didn't mean it in that context. but can see if someone saw it that way. I just mean having the places that if the athletes want to go they dont have to pay a shitload of cash.
of course the athletes should win important qualifying event or already perhaps have previously been in previous olympics or such. but the idea is for the government to pay for it and not let some of these guys work 2-3 jobs while they are training in order to pay for the time that is spent at places such as colorado springs, lake placid, or san diego.

I could have told you that when the Soviets established the Gulags

I just don't get this at all. Y'all are saying that the US should sponsor Olympic training centers like the Chinese do because their athletes are superior when you still haven't addressed on glaring fact - we have won the Olympic medal count for decades now.

Well I think the point is that they have nearly double the number of Gold that we do right now.

We will murder them in Track and Field, which is a ton of the medals.
Posted on 8/14/08 at 8:46 pm to TigerPrincess
of course we have dominated
for me its more about advancing sport science. we already have great coaches who not only came from the former eastern bloc but coaches who have also learned from them as well.
afterall most of these athletes learn olympic weightlifting techniques and the best technical olympic weightlifters have always came from bulgaria, romania, russia, etc.
plus it would give exercise scientists more jobs, more money for better quality research which leads to more published articles.

And? We're a week into the Olympics.

And things such as the Gatorade Sports Science Institute and the various university sports science centers aren't doing that?
Posted on 8/14/08 at 8:50 pm to TigerPrincess
Do we really need a state-run push to get kids to excel in table tennis and badminton? What's wrong with people playing sports for the love of the game and potentially competing in the Olympics doing what they love?
