Why are Black quarterbacks considered a "symbol of progress" for society?

Now, correct me if I'm wrong... but isn't the NFL 70% Black? Are people seriously acting like it's some great injustice that there are few Black quarterbacks relative to White quarterbacks?
Do we strive for this same "progress" when it comes to White wide-receivers or running backs? Is that a symbol of "progress"?
It just seems stupid to act like this is a problem when the league is 70% Black.

This project started with my dad on Thanksgiving. He was reminiscing about Doug Williams, who in 1988 became the first black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl. All these years later, he was still proud of Williams, whose name to some may be that of a half-remembered player from the past but to millions of others remains a powerful symbol of progress. It stayed with me, and it seemed that it was worth telling the story not just of Williams, but of everyone—of all those generations of players who struggled so that Russell Wilson could be, simply, a good young quarterback.

Are white defensive backs a symbol of progress?

In the bad old days it was conventional wisdom that black people weren't smart enough to be quarterbacks, and any black QB who joined an integrated team could expect to be moved to another position.

Can we not do this

Can we get a dominant white small forward please.

Now give us a percentage of black QBs.
Am I doing this right?

I don't see people celebrating Wes Welker as a symbol of progress.

Would've saved a shitty thread if OP actually knew this (i.e. history).

Because when football was integrated white coaches said that blacks weren't smart enough to play MLB and QB. If you look at the amount of black qbs that have started in the league you will see the progression

Seems like the people wants diversity only pushes for it for high status jobs. With the NFL, it's QBs and head coaches. No one ever fights for diversity for low status positions like punter, centers, long snapper. So it's doesn't make sense when you want diversity in some areas(the good ones) and not others.
Same thing with feminists. You ever hear about shortage of women in construction or plumbing? You always hear about top jobs like CEOs.
So when you want diversity in some area but not others, you're not truly for diversity.

Doesn't LSU have a black kicker or punter. They also had a white WR

We never talk about Polynesians though

They do. But you don't hear "we need more black punters". Instead we hear "there's not enough black coaches". That's not diversity. That's just choosing your cake and eating it.
