Did Clayton Kershaws deal have that?
Don't know. Clayton didn't send me a copy of his contract. But I talked with Scott Garrelts (SF Giants pitcher) a few years ago about his contract signed just before his career ending surgery. I don't remember the numbers he cited so I'm just going to use some round ones to paraphrase what he said:
He was an all-star pitcher and signed a 5 year deal for let's say 3M a year = 15M.
Then his arm went out. He expected to still get paid 4 years x 3M = 12M because it was guaranteed.
Team said no, they cited some clauses. He threatened a lawsuit. Team said "OK, we can go to court for 2 years and our lawyers make the money or we can give you 8M right now and be done with it.
He took the money and ripped up the contract.
The most famous case was Bruce Sutter. The Braves signed him to a 10 year guaranteed deal. His arm went bad in year one. They had to pay him for the next 9 years.

I don't see it either. I am having a difficult time thinking of any recent contracts that are "team friendly" and not outrageous.

Because it isn't happening.

. The "game day experience", due to there being 162 games. Last year the Cowboys led the NFL in attendance with 88,043 per game... x8 home games = 704,043 on the year. The Devil Rays were dead last in attendance last year in the MLB, with 17,857 per game.... x81 home games = 1,446,464 on the year. They were dead last in the MLB and its twice as much than the Cowboys who led the NFL. So that's twice as much ticket sales, concessions, etc. The Dodgers led the MLB with 3,782,337. That's a bunch of $$$.
Ok this is a good illustration of how the number of games influences attendance and tv contracts. I didn't realize it was that much of a discrepancy
It's also interesting to think how tv will affect attendance for NFL/CFB going forward. I've always been of the opinion that football is more enjoyable at home than live? Yes Gameday atmospheres are great but then there's traffic, parking, smuggling in alcohol, public restrooms ect, ect only to sit and wait for tv timeouts, booth reviews and other stoppages in play. I enjoy the comfort of my home, the ability to access social media, and the absence of 5 hour traffic. I haven't been to Jerry's World but I've heard more people watch the TV screen than the on field action. Basketball is the best in person because of the constant action IMO.
Stadiums are being built smaller to offset and "more intimate" to offset these issues. Will be interesting to see how it affects revenue

yes they're worth it.
The owners earn enough money from Ticket sales and TV to afford it and still make a massive profit, so they are worth it. Like seeing revenue going to those who actually drive the revenue, instead of all of it going to overhead.

MLB revenue in 2013 was $8.5 billion, they expect revenue for this season to be over $9 billion.
By comparison-
NHL- $3.7 billion
NBA- $5 billion
NFL- $9.5 billion
in baseball, a team generates revenue from 81 home games, and the average stadium max capacity is probably 45k. nfl 8 home games, 75k capacity, nba 41 home games 15k(i think) capacity.
