Pretty good article on Grantland a few days ago, kinda long but pretty informative.
I thought the part about your brain having an effect on tears was interesting.

According to the MSB, it's because athletes are not as big and strong as they were from 1980 to 1995.

Didnt someone say yesterday that Gronk was only the second ACL injury due to contact this year?

Hell I thought it was the opposite. 240 pound guys with track speed, 300 pounders that are quick as a cat.

I think there's some truth to that.
I think another reason is a lot of these guys are training longer/harder these days than in the past, putting more stress on their bodies.

Maybe defenders know that going in high will get them flagged, so they go low and blow out knees instead?

These guys train so har and build so much muscles around the knee but can't strengthen the ligaments. They are putting so much torque on the cuts and stuff.

Is there actually data suggesting that ACL tears are on the rise or is this just a claim the OP is making?
If you read the Article it is a question in the heading.

I know that after week 8 of this season, there was like 45 ACL tears. More than the 2011 and 2012 season, and only in 8 weeks.

yeah, someone did say that. Didn't Honey Badger tear his ACL last week too?

In the article it states:
quote:
Where the number of tears seems to hit epidemic proportions is in the NFL. Professional football doesn't release ACL figures, either, but Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com discovered that as of October 23, 30 players had been placed on injured reserve because of ACL tears — topping the 25 for all of 2011 and edging close to the 32 for all of 2012.
I don't know how many have been placed on IR for ACL's in the last 6 weeks or so.

Artificial turf is the reason. Just wait, a study will come out soon about it.
Natural turf would have come up with Gronks leg and took off some pressure, the artificial turf grabbed the foot and doesnt give and therfore puts extra strain on it, snapping the acl

This is where i got the number 45 from... LINK
Actual count is 53 now. LINK
But I think that list also accounts for injuries in practice and preseason. Its from the start of the 2013 season to the Super Bowl.
And yea Ive been skeptical about the artificial turn being a factor too... Not surprising. Ive played on it a few years ago and your cleat literally sticks in the turf. At least with grass it tends to give and youll slide. Turf, your cleat sticks into it and it doesnt give.
