Well, he was raised as an American Indian in Oklahoma, so that explains the alcoholism.

As far as being broke, he was a victim of the depression.. I also read of his struggles holding jobs after sports, mostly due to his drinking I'm sure.

AI was a legendary high school football player. Not saying he belongs in this discussion necessarily but he was an amazing athlete. He was so good in his prime, unbelievably smooth.

Legendary high school athlete does not equal most well rounded professional athlete.
I'm well aware AI was an awesome QB/DB in high school, I've seen the highlights. But he was essentially using the same skills he used on the basketball court

And as far as more recent athletes go, Randy Moss should get more love in this thread. An athlete if there ever was one.

Not really. He was coordinated in the sense that he could run and jump... he had good body control.

But when it comes to technical aspects of being an athlete... like shooting a free throw... he couldn't do it.

That leads me to believe that he wouldn't be very good at swinging a baseball bat, throwing a football or baseball, kicking a soccer ball, etc.

He can run and jump very well for his size because he's athletic. But is he "well-rounded"... I would say no.

Randy Moss

I said earlier he should at least be in the conversation. I posted his HS stats in the GOAT HS athlete thread.

quote:

Moss led the DuPont Panthers to back-to-back state championships in 1992, 1993, and 1994. He was a star at wide receiver, but also played defensive back, returned kickoffs and punts, and was the team's kicker and punter. In 1994, he was honored as the West Virginia Football Player of the Year. Parade magazine named him to their annual All-American high school football team in 1995 and in 2009 named him one of the 50 greatest high school football players of all time.

In addition to playing football at DuPont, Moss was twice named West Virginia Player of the Year in basketball (1993, 1994), where he was a teammate of future NBA player Jason Williams.

As a sophomore in 1992, at the age of 14 years old, he ran for the track team and was the West Virginia state champion in the 100 and 200 meters with times of 10.94 and 21.95, respectively. This was the only year he competed on the track team. He also played center field for the baseball team.

I wonder if he could hit a curve ball, because if so he's up there in the discussion.
