The undisputed greatest player of all-time before Jordan took the top spot? Kareem?

Playing ability?
Elgin Baylor probably.
The first to really play above the rim and score at will.

Ask PEEJ, he's been following the NBA since before 'Nam.

Wilt or Russell in the 60s depending on your flavor.
70s and early 80s Kareem had six! Mvps.
In 1986 it was Bird. He had won the title and was coming off 3 straight league mvps and 6 straight years where he was top 2 in the league mvp voting.plus the rookie of the year before that.
Magic was the best in 87 and after that collected 2 more mvps. But those last 2 were debatable.Jordan was lighting it up though and had all the performances but had not won any titles yet.
The top 7 in mvps all time are the all time top 7 players in the league. It really works out nicely. You can put them in any order but
Kareem
Jordan
Wilt
Bird
Magic
LeBron
Russell
Those are the top 7.

I posted this back in May when one more annoying thread came up about - is LeBron the Goat?
A question asked every month during the NBA season.
It's always the latest and newest...hell, people are already jumping of KD's bandwagon. Some generations have 2-3 Goats, some have one...but GOAT is always is the last best thing you saw.

Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double. The Big O.
George Mikan was the first 7 footer. Multitime champion.
Wilt.
Kareem.
Bob Pettit is a great not too many talk about.

Jordan was an outstanding player and there is simply no disputing that. However, his immense fame and notoriety have as much to do with being the face of Nike at the right time in history as his playing ability
He was also fortunate to hit his peak popularity at a time Bird and Magic were on the decline, Dr. J had retired, the NBA was booming after the great 1980's and need a "face" of the league.

Not sure why that matters. The rest of the league wasn't any worse than what magic and bird played against and MJ was clearly better against them

Chamberlain was and remains the best player ever.

I love how people downplay Jordan but have no clue.
Jordan was considered top 10 player as a rookie. Then breaks foot and comes back and legend explodes.
You can tell who never saw a game before 1995 by these posts
