re: Who is your AL MVP?

While I don't believe it has to be the player on the best team I do think team performance should play a small role. This year the contenders are so close that should remove trout from discussion. Performance in a pennant/wild card chase is different than performance in 80+ meaningless games for the Angels

Countless managers say Mookie Betts is the best player in baseball? I doubt that.

Not laughing at your opinion at all, it's just the whole 'countless managers' thing is an inside joke on TD that you apparently don't understand.

Exactly -- I can see it going to any of the 3 leading candidates. But I don't think you can add in, "well, Trout should have won it last year" as an argument for him to get it this year (as I think a previous poster kind of alluded to?).
I'm more arguing the opposite. People subconsciously think, "Trout already has his MVP, so since this is close, let's give it to the other guy." He's been the best player in baseball for 4-5 years, and he's likely to have one MVP to show for it (I don't think he'll win it this year either).
There's always an excuse to not give it to Trout. It's always someone else's turn. Someone always has a better story. This year, that's Altuve.

It is a soccer board running joke that has spread to the MSB.
Great usage of it

Added Donaldson:
Altuve: .354 BA, 22 HR, 88 RBI, 26 SB, .983 OPS, and 7.29 WAR
Trout: .311 BA, 25 HR, 84 RBI, 21 SB, .991 OPS, and 8.65 WAR
Betts: .322 BA, 30 HR, 96 RBI, 21 SB, .927 OPS, and 7.6 WAR
Donaldson: .294 BA, 34 HR, 92 RBI, 6 SB, .990 OPS, and 7.0 WAR
You can forgive his lower batting average due to high OPS. His lack of stolen bases stand out as compared to the others.

I just find it really hard to overlook someone who is a solid defender and is batting .354 w/ power.

Agree, it is Altuve's to lose at this point. He spent first 44 games this season at leadoff, which would depress his RBI numbers some, and he still has 88 for year. His BA has dipped some these last 2-3 weeks, so hopefully he can keep it up.

Mookie Betts hit leadoff in 108 games this season.

Red Sox are gonna have both the MVP and Cy Young this year

I don't know how much of a role team performance should really play. Only about 6 guys have ever won an MVP award playing for a losing team. But I agree that all things being equal (or relatively equal) team performance should play a role as a tiebreaker.
Last year it was close between Donaldson and Trout, Donaldson's team won their division and Trout's team didn't make the playoffs.
This year I expect a similar result, any of the candidates that don't make the postseason won't win the MVP.

Not even close. Give it to Jose!

Why would a player on a team 20 games below .500 be the MVP? Doesn't seem very valuable to me
One of the best players in the game? Absolutely. Not the MVP in 2016.
