In an NFL Films feature on Don Meredith, one of his Cowboy teammates (Dan Reeves IIRC) claimed that on the plane back from a playoff loss in Cleveland, Meredith nearly died.

Meredith had suffered a punctured lung in the previous game, and spent several days in the hospital with pneumonia. He still played in Cleveland, though not well and was relieved by Craig Morton. At some point (I don't know exactly when) Meredith's lung collapsed.

I sometimes wonder how the NFL would have been affected if Meredith had died. This was a few weeks before the Namath SB. Would the PR disaster of a star QB dying have blunted the enormous momentum of the NFL's growth?

In fairness, those were one off incidents and one of them happened in a MAC game.

The quarterbacks mentioned were all guys who took a beating week in and week out.

Leftwich was known as one of the toughest bastards in the NFL during his time too.

And just because it happened in a MAC game doesn't make it any less tough, playing on a broken tibia is just as damned impressive wether it happens in the Super Bowl or a 7th grade jamboree.

Joe Kapp got into a fist-fight in his 70's over a 40-year old football grudge.

He was once on the cover of S.I. as the "toughest chicano"

He is the only QB to play in the Rose Bowl, Super Bowl and Grey Cup.

They say he has Alzheimer's now from all those old days headshots you couldn't do today.

Did anyone post the Sam Bradford game where he was playing audibly hurt and it was captured on the mic?
