Phog Allen easily. He's the father of modern day basketball coaching, actually learned the game of basketball from the inventor of the game himself, and was a major influence on two of the greatest coaches ever (Dean Smith and Adolph Rupp).

Who told him - "you can't coach basketball, you just play it."

It's so hard to rate the guys from the 50s and before, but out of Self, Brown, and Roy, I think Self is the clearcut answer.

Roy choked with very talented teams, and while Larry Brown won a championship, it was as tainted as any.

Self is great. He maximizes his team's talent and his groups usually over-achieve. There have been a couple of tourney stumbles, but I think he is one of the top 5 coaches in college ball.

Naismith invented basketball but had a losing record as a head coach.

self just completed (will complete tomorrow night) the most successful 6 year run (by W/L) since UCLA with wooden. he just won 8 straight conference titles. he is doing absolutely ridiculous things.

Still can't believe John White screwed things up with Self back in 2000.

Roy, Larry brown left the program on probation and in shambles after he won a title. Every player worth a crap left and no recruits were coming in due to the probation.Roy immediately turned Kansas into a national power, one of the best coaching jobs in recent times.
