This might be a controversial opinion but I don't think Tyson is even a top 10 heavyweight of all-time.

He's top 10. He may not crack the top 5, though.

He's one of the most compelling figures, and a cautionary tale for sure. But he never beat any top heavyweights.

I was a kid at the time so I don't remember, but did he ever beat anyone who was actually world-class, or did he just rock the frick out of a bunch of chumps? I know in his later career he couldn't beat the best in the business and had to resort to... unorthodox... tactics.

Smallish heavyweight during a really down period for the division.

I mean, is he going to beat Joe Frazier? Ken Norton? Ernie Shavers?

Didn't Tyson rise to fame by beating a bunch of tomato cans?

No Rushmore, more like 9th or 10th. There were just too many great heavyweights.

Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Marciano, Louis, Johnson, Holmes, Norton; I'd put all of those ahead of Tyson

The sonny liston of his era.

Good. Not great.

Reminds me of an english boxer who used uppercut to knock out 1st round oppenents. Someone timed him and rocked him to sleep.
Could not actually box.

There was a big hitting south african heavy champ cotzee. Broke his hand. Used hgh and steroids to heal. He got caught. During his brief reign, he hit like Tyson and could actually box.

This is where you start to lose me. Holmes was garbage and arguably more a beneficiary of the dwindling heavyweight division than Tyson. Norton was basically Tyson-lite.

Lennox Lewis, Holyfield, Bowe, probably both Klitchkos. I love, love, love Mike Tyson. One of my favorite athletes of all time. But he's nowhere near a top 10 heavyweight or a top 40ish overall boxer. Razor Ruddock may be the best heavyweight he ever beat. Who? Exactly.

The problem with Tyson, was that nearly everyone in the Heavyweight division were tater bags, just garbage, over weight tater bags. Spinks was not a Heavy Weight, and he took a dive instead of beating

The division had bottomed out, some really shitty boxers. C'mon, Buster Douglas was crap.

Great boxer, but man did he pad his win totals with tater bags.

Also, one could say the best fighter he fought, beat him on the square(holyfield) both times. so?

It's the prevailing opinion among boxing experts. You almost never see him rated in the top 10 by any boxing writers.

The whole "Mike Tyson would be the GOAT if Cus hadn't died" or "Mike Tyson in his prime could wreck anybody" is one of the silliest oft-quoted myths in all of sports.

Disagree. Buster Douglas was a very solid boxer, just wasn't really a "fighter." He had a very good upbringing and never really needed boxing like a lot of boxers usually do. Hence, he always had motivation issues, except that one night.
