Bird would be ranked way ahead of LBJ.

Lebron is unquestionably #2, so Bird is GOAT!!!

"Larry Bird was a basketball genius." - Dr. J

Allow Doc Rivers to tell the story:

“Bird got in the zone and he started calling the shots, he started saying “off the glass”, that was the one game I think he tortured Dominique.

“He saw Dominique as this up and coming player and he just tortured him, mentally. He tortured all of us, he was calling shots,”off the glass” “who’s next”, “where you want this one from” and he just made one after another. When he got to about the 55th point you knew it was something special.”

“Even as a player, and that usually doesn’t happen, but we were down so much at the time, you got time to realize the game. The last shot, he said “in the trainer’s lap” coming down the court, which meant it was going to be a three and it was going to from deep, and then he said “who wants it?”. Then I think Reggie Brown, I’m not sure who it was, ran out after him, he shot this high rainbow, it goes in, Reggie bumps into him and accidentally knocks him on our trainer’s lap.

“So it was exactly what he said, it was an accident but it was almost fate. They show a shot of our bench, Cliff Livingston and Eddie Johnson are standing up giving each other high fives, it was pretty awesome.

“That night was not awesome. We had to go back to the room, and Mike Fratello, instead of going out to eat, he had a team meeting and put the film in and says “it’s one thing to be in awe, it’s another thing to cheer for the other team”. And he shows this back and forth, and kept rewinding the high five. It was awesome.”

Stats don't really tell any story.

As Kevin McHale once said...Bird controlled every game...and he could do it with just 12 shots.

But I brought up the subject because it seems Bird has sort of become "re-maligned" over the years.

Everyone said he was too slow and couldn't jump and made fun of him first entering the league...then he made everyone fools...and he was labeled GOAT while he actually played (which is rare). I mean he was called the greatest player of all-time while he played.

Then...with millennials...it became...once again..."he was too slow and couldn't jump" blah-blah-blah...etc.

It's like Bird has been attacked twice from a 40 year old stereotype. I wonder if he ever overcomes that...once the 80's people die out.

I mean, I heard someone mention Bird on ESPN and immediately they compare him to Dirk Nowitzki!

Are fricking kidding me? Why? Just because they are both white and forwards? Dirk in Bird's league?

That's how marginalized Bird seems to have become.

Dirk is one of the most offensively gifted players to ever play in the NBA.

If I email McHale every day until he answers the question, "who is better between Bird and Lebron "James" James?" Will you quit putting Bird ahead of LBJ?

Bird made more people eat the words 'white guys can't play' than any player in NBA history.

Agreed.

It really is impossible to compare players from different eras, but Bird was so dominant and just positioned those Celtics teams to be THE team of the 80s along with the Lakers. It was one of the best rivalries in all of sports for years.

There really is nothing like what was going on with Bird and Magic and the Celtics-Lakers. They would play on Christmas Day and the nation would stop and watch. The two times they played in the regular season were huge events and were anticipated. Every game was a war. There is no comparison today.

I don't think Bird is the greatest of all time. But, he is definitely top 10. I'd take him over Lebron just because of his attitude and ability to lead a team and form it around his will. Magic was the same was as was Jordan. I really haven't seen a player like that in the NBA since, and that includes Lebron. Kobe tried, but was too selfish. It's an intangible quality that only a few have.

I'm glad you brought this up.

Because that's the point.

There has been this definition of Bird from people who never saw him play. They see Youtube clips or 3-point shot contest in the All-Star game...

But never watched a full game in 1984.

Reducing Bird to "a shooter" or as "the best 3-point guy" is actually an insult.

Bird and Magic are in serious conversations about who is the best passer of all-time. Bird was also one of the best rebounders of all-time...far better than Magic. And of course Bird (this is what he is famous for by people who never saw him play) is maybe the best shooter of all-time.

I posted this question because I wondered if Bird had become narrowed to shite like "3-point shooter" or Dirk...

So it's true.

And that's sad. Every phase of the game...as Pat Riley said, Bird dominated. He won games without even shooting.

But he's now remembered as a sharpshooting 3-point white guy whose equal is some German dude.

He's pretty inarguably a top 5 player of all time. I feel like he's usually included in such list. If he isn't, the person making said list is dumb and doesn't know what he's talking about.

Everything posted about Lakers-Celtics in the 80s is true.

It was just pure awesome. Flat-out wars.

Magic and Bird saved the NBA.

The Celtics were 29-53 before Bird. They stunk. One of the worst in the league.

With Bird as a fricking rookie...they went 61-21 and the best record in the league.

* And this was all before Parish and McHale. They weren't on the goddamn team.

quote:

Did Lebron ever do that? Hell no!, maybe Magic did it. But did LeBron of Kobe engineer a 35 win turnaround? Because I hope LeBron did...to be back in the conversation of GOAT (sort of a requirement from historians and basketball fans and normal people. )

The 2002 Cavs team went 17-65...the next year with LeBron they went 35-47.

17-65 to 35-47

29-53 to 61-21

Look at the shitty Celtics 1980 roster:

Nate fricking Archibald
Dave Cowens
M.L. Carr
Chris Ford
Pete Maravich (who sadly was in the last years of his life and was a shell of himself.)

Mavs stunk before Dirk...mostly stunk with him.

Bulls stunk before Jordan...

Like Bird, Bulls finally won a title...

It took Jordan years and years.

It didn't take Bird years and years...when he inherited a shitty team.

They were the best immediately. LeBron's team wasn't...Jordan's team wasn't.

Magic won immediately also but he inherited a better situation.

Magic and Bird inherited worse than LeBron and won immediately. It took LeBron a lifetime to turn his team around.

Bird made the Celtics a title contender in one year? Has LeBron ever done that? Nope.
