Whenever I end up going on one of my youtube basketball highlights (And other "Suggested videos") adventures, I always end up watching highlights of him. He was good at basketball. Not just the C position things. He could pass, shoot, run the floor. The 90's would've been different had he come over sooner. Frick the USSR!

Portland couldn't hit a shot to save their life. they went 3-18 from the field in the fourth or something like that. was truly the coming out party for the kobe/shaq duo

different reasons why but very similar to how the 2008 lakers weren't supposed to win the west

That was a very weird year. SA had an epic playoff battle against the Hornets and the kings before y'all.

Wonder how it would have turned out differently if the Spurs don't have to sleep on the plane before game 1 of the WCF. How the hell the NBA ok'd a 1 day turnaround is beyond me.

ETA: Not really bitter about it anymore though. That SA team just ran out of gas. If it wasn't against y'all it probably would have been in the Finals.

Wold have been one of our tougher playoff roads.

Yup. He was the type of renaissance big man everyone wants on their team.

Crying shame more folks in the states can't appreciate how good he was.

Shaw was pretty good in that game. That oop at the end of the game was foreshadowing what Kobe and Shaq were about to do to the league.

Iconic

Seems like every playoffs has one or two unquestionably chill inducing moments like that.

he was just another player who may not have shown up on the stat sheet but gave those lakers teams quality depth. outside of kobe, shaq, and glen rice the 2000 laker team didn't have a single player who scored more than 10 points a game. they just had a bunch of players who knew how to win and would come up big

Yeah that was ridiculous too. Robs the fans of good sport imo.

I guess it is what it is.

I feel like they've gotten better with it. they are no longer trying to cram too many games together come playoff time like it felt like they did a couple times in the 2000s

Yeah I haven't had a scheduling complaint in a while and that's good.

And its not even close

As far as single team, Id say its top 3 or so with that 15-1 lakers team and maybe 1012 heat

Regardless of which team would win in a showdown, I like the '14 Spurs better than the '01 Lakers. I am far more impressed with what the Spurs did, absent any true, established super star in their prime. The Lakers had two. The Spurs, IMO, played the prettiest basketball in my 33 years.

what? The Lakers have won the same amount of titles, won the west one more time than the spurs have, and own the playoff head to head over the spurs. At the bare minimum its close

Why did the Lakers in 2001 have a worse regular season than the year before? They lost like 11 more games than 99-00, but blew through the playoffs.....did they have injury issues?

No injury issues, that was the year the Kobe/Shaq feud really started developing. For most of the year Kobe was refusing to be 2nd fiddle to Shaq. Towards the end of the year he missed several games and Phil's on record saying this is when Kobe realized how good the team could be if he just played within the system. The lakers won their final 8 games that year and then went on to destroy everyone in the playoffs.
