Threads like this remind me of the collective age of a lot of MSB posters. It it didn't occur since 2000, it didn't exist.

Best passing season ever was 5477. You're telling me Dan Marino would be 600 yards better than the best passing season on record... twice? Average 375 yards per game... twice?

I never liked Shula. Just not a good coach. That was Miami's problem more then a lack of defensive talent and schemes

Don Shula is one of th GOAT coaches

Dan Marino passed for 5084 on 564 attempts in 1984. That was in an NFL with much less friendly rules for passing as we had now. I think 6000 would certainly be in play if you 100 pass attempts and more liberal passing rules.
Marino, despite low mobility, was tough to sack, and its not like we've seen a spike in sack numbers. There's no reason he would be easier to sack in the modern NFL compared to the 80s.
But he only cleared 4500 one other time, so its tough to think he'd have multiple 6000 yard seasons. But once? Probably. He'd almost certainly be top 3 in all-time yardage had he played under the modern rules (he's #5), but Peyton and Favre would be hard to top. They have an extra 10,000 yards on him, and that's a lot.

Marino had 564 attempts, 64.2% completion, 5084 yards, and 9.0ypa in a totally different era. That record stood for almost 20 years and went through very good QBs without anyone coming close. Today's game is a different era where a guy like cousins is top 3 in passing yards.
Put him on a pass happy offense with no run game in today's era, he's throwing it 650 times easily. You could adjust his stats with increased completion % due to increased roles in the pass game by running backs but slightly less ypa realistically... Or he can have a matt Ryan level season where he has the attempts, completion%, and ypa.
Even keeping all stats stable (completion% and ypa), an extra 100 attempts gives him 664 attempts at 9.0ypa gives him 5976 yards. 6k isn't totally ridiculous.

God, Marino with the Saints the last 10 years.
What a show that would have been.
I mean if noodle Brees can pass for over 5,000 5 times, shite...Marino...
60 attempts a game, 7,000 yards.
