I think you are correct. Iona is just a blip on the radar screen that was Valvano's coaching career. A bigger blip than Bucknell, but cannot come close to comparing to his NCS career.
I think the world of Jimmy V. The unspecified amounts of money that changed hands with Ruland was peanuts, but that doesn't make it any less an NCAA violation.
To this day, I am not sure that I know the full story about NCS. I like to think it was players only. It is clear that his players at NCS loved him. The 30/30 show I saw on him and that team was inspiring and moving. Almost as moving as Jimmy's "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." speech.

I don't have a problem with any of it. It's a good thing, I've just seen it all tons of times

One of the great speeches, that is for sure. He could hardly contain his enthusiasm and charisma.

And Mr. Saint himself - Coach K - said Jimmy V didn't do anything wrong or bad or against the NCAA...but players did and he got the blame.
but he got the players

Jim Valvano was sort of a mix between Al McGuire, Dick Vitale, and John Calipari.
I can go along with this.... His ESPY speech is one for the history books... Something you just can't NOT watch again and what a message it sends............. I will never forget that magical run in 1983... And it all ended like a dream.. With him just running around the court looking for somebody to hug....

Delivered that awesome speech like a boss, yet he was so weak he had to be helped off the stage. Poignant moment.

a boss? What? it was a great speech esp with the circumstances. When State beat Houston that was an incredible upset. Jimmy V has inspired so many people

Everyone needs to take the time to read this book

He did some shady things. And if you blame the players then you have to say there was a lack of institutional control.
If you give Chris Washburn a scholarship, you know what you are getting into.
But I watch the speech every year and remember all of 1983. I was a teenager back then and I was pulling for him.
