I mean as a player. The position that has the most talent. Where you constantly have to fight off people for your job. For be sake of this thread let's limit it to the big 4 sports.

There are ebbs and flows to this kind of stuff but which position in sports today do you think is most chock full of talent?

NBA guard?

Seems like the NBA at all positions leads the "odds race" in chance of making it vs. other sports.

So, by the numbers it has to be an NBA position probably.

Pitcher.

If you pitch in the majors, for at least 95% of them, their organization just drafted at least one guy with more arm talent than you

These are two slightly different questions imo

WR in the NFL is pretty fricking stacked with top end talent right now.

As far as being able to lose your job in an instant though I'll offer a hot take and say kicker in the NFL. Most contracts structured so they're easily disposed and it seems like teams are often willing to part with a guy after a couple weeks of bad misses

CBs in football today can't touch WRs anymore and CBs are just losing one stop away from being out of the league.

High school senior players eventually drafted by an NBA team: About three in 10,000, or 0.03 percent.

High school senior players eventually drafted by an NFL team: About nine in 10,000, or 0.09 percent.

if we are saying pro sports of Soccer, Football, Basketball, and Baseball
I'd say NFL Running Back - so many lose their job because they got injured for a few games and the backup simply did better

Exactly, the pool of possible NBA point guards ranges from 5'11" - 6'7" - just so many possible people in the world that are good at basketball at that height, only so many 6'10" skilled people in the world

i personally think it's running back and not even close. you can win the job in week 5 and be out of the league forever by week 12, it's insane.

Yeah but almost no one plays American Football outside of America.

Basketball is so global right now.

And how competitive is a position when you don't even have to be great at it. You mentioned getting dropped to practice squad. NFL mentality is plug and play at the RB position. Meaning you do get opportunities and chances - because players get hurt or fall out of favor.

Try getting into an NBA game if you have two stud guards ahead of you. Didn't Jeremy Lin play like 5 minutes in 4 years before he got a chance with the Knicks after everyone in front of him got hurt?

Backup running backs see the field more often - backup NBA players ride the pine.

NBA Point Guard. Forwards and centers aren't as competitive because there aren't many 6'7"-7' genetic freaks out there. Even a shooting guard has to be at least 6'4" or 6'5" and again there aren't as many top athletes out there at that height. But at point guard, measurements aren't as important. It's almost entirely about skill and ability and athleticism. There are hundreds of millions of people who play basketball and a large majority of them aren't tall enough to be a 2-guard or forward or center. The only position they can play in the NBA is point guard. So the competition there is as absolutely insane.

that doesn't really matter because the jobs exist globally as well. so football is basically only american and all running backs come from american colleges to work in the american nfl.

basketball is global so guards can come from anywhere, but you can also play anywhere. if you get cut from an nba team, you can still make six figures elsewhere. the position of "basketball guard" likely has a similar ratio to nfl running back in that sense.

and it's totally unfair to say "NBA guard." that's not a position in sports, that's a specific league. what's stopping you from saying "quarterback for the green bay packers"?

I would say it has to be a baseball position. Most young kids recognize early on whether they have the athleticism to play football or basketball at a high level. If not, they focus on baseball. So I think the sheer numbers are higher in baseball. So I would say SS or P.
