Looks like his passport was revoked by Turkey while he's in a Romanian airport.

Some reports say he's likely to get arrested when he's deported back to Turkey for his political views. Anyone have more info on this?

That's a possibility. He talked shite about the government pretty publicly so they pulled his passport and now he's stuck in Romania and could be deported to Turkey.

His family has also disowned him for what he said.

If anyone's curious to exactly what he did/said:

quote:

Kanter spoke out against Erdogan’s government in March after a terrorist bombing in Ankara that killed 37 people and injured more than 100, criticizing the country’s obstruction of broadcast media and access to social media.

Last year Kanter, a five-year NBA veteran who was tabbed with the No3 overall pick in the 2011 draft, said he was left off Turkey’s national team for EuroBasket 2015 due to his political views, a claim denied by national team coach Ergin Ataman.

He also received death threats for openly speaking out against the regime:

quote:

The 24-year-old posted screenshots of a series of threats he’s received on Twitter since Friday in response to his support of exiled Muslim cleric Fethullah Gülen. The posts, written in Turkish, include phrases such as “You will die soon” beside ominous images of weapons and nooses.

If they ship him back, it's going to be bad.

Yes taxpayer money should be used to ensure someone who is not a citizen gets back to the US because they are good at basketball

Maybe he will learn that talking shite about a dude who just shut down a military coup and is purging the press is not a smart idea if you plan on going back.

ETA Im not saying I agree with Ergodan but just saying that maybe an NBA player who is still a citizen of Turkey should think twice before sounding off politically

Bro.

Close your computer or phone and go think about what you've done.

You added an ETA to distract from the real edit

Agreed. If you're going to put yourself out there as an advocate/critic, know your actions have consequences.

Very few countries are like America.

The US has nothing to do with this. He's not an American citizen. He plays basketball in the states for 6 months of the year. Irrelevant to this situation.

He'd be the very definition of a political refugee. He is speaking out against his country moving towards being an Islamic law based dictatorship. He is exactly the kind of person we should be giving asylum to b/c his quasi celebrity status brings more attention to what is happening in Turkey. Of course we probably won't do that considering Erdogan's thugs were allowed to beat peaceful protestors on US soil w/so much as a slap on the wrist from the current admin.
