Now, before we get into whether this will happen or not (I believe there’s a very very low chance of Sean White beating an Alabama team, but for now assume it happens), let’s discuss what in the frick would happen if Auburn did pull it off. This would be one of the all-time sports arguments, and I can see both sides of it.

Auburn would have two losses, would be the champion of their conference, and would have arguably (at that point) the best win of the season (Bama) and maybe the best loss of the season (Clemson). At the same time, Bama would have one less loss than Auburn.

What do you think would happen? I think there are enough college football purists on the committee that winning head-to-head and winning your conference will likely push Auburn over the edge, but it will be a crazy debate. I could see Bama getting the edge based off their season as a whole, but people will lose it if Bama makes it in for a second time without being the best team in their conference.

The sports talking heads would explode for weeks if this scenario actually ended up happening.

Both would probably make it assuming Washington loses one otherwise Bama is out

They've lost two home games. They don't deserve it even if they win out

This right here

We would get in. Problaby #4 or #3 depending on how the other teams do.

Bama would depend on if Michigan or Washington stays unbeaten

But I would not count on it. Auburn never pulls off the impossible

The only way Auburn goes over Alabama would be Auburn winning out, Washington winning out, Clemson and Michigan winning out. so you are forced to take the 3 undefeated teams and choose between Alabama and Auburn.

In that scenario Auburn should go. My reasoning is Auburn elected to play Clemson who's a top 3 team, had they played a cupcake they'd be 11-1 and SEC Champ and there would be no argument to take Bama over them. Since they lost a close game to a top 5 team OOC I don't think in that instance it should cost them a shot. Now if Clemson loses and drops out of the top 5. I think you could take Bama over Clemson OR Auburn because then Auburn has 2 losses outside of the top 5.In fact you could take Bama and Louisville in that scenario because Clemson would have a bad loss.

If Washington loses or Michigan loses to OSU. Then you'd have a real cluster frick but I don't see an 11-1 defending national champion being left out because of 1 top 5 loss (as long as it was a close game).

I don't know. The talking heads have been vocal about the fact that Washington has not played a tough schedule. Their remaining schedule is against USC, Arizona State, and Wash St in the regular season, and assuming they make the PAC-12 Title game, Colorado unless they slip.

None of those are particularly big wins, considering Wash St lost to Eastern Washington (FCS) and Colorado was skull drug by Michigan.

Depending on how the Iron Bowl goes and how Bama finishes, you might see an argument for Bama and Auburn, should Auburn win the Iron Bowl by a close margin.

I don't think Bama should be in at that point, but we've already seen them value the SEC Strength of Schedule over an undefeated PAC-12 team. They may do it again if they aren't impressed by Washington.

The committee won't leave out an undefeated PAC 12 team. It's just not gonna happen unless there's 4 other undefeated teams

A one loss big 10 champ Ohio State would go ahead of a one loss Bama as well

In the unlikely (but not impossible) chance that this happens, they will likely (but not certainly) be in the playoffs.

The scenario was obviously presented as an Auburn or Alabama debate.

Of course if other teams also lose they could both be in. The interesting debate becomes if you have to chose between a 2 loss team who beat one team over a 1 loss team who lost to that team.

I agree although Bama scheduled what (they thought) would be a very tough game against Southern Cal, and I doubt anyone at Auburn thought they'd be playing a Clemson team of this caliber when they scheduled them.

This would be such a rare instance of neither team having an obvious, major thing you could hold against them relative to the other.

If Auburn beats Bama, there's absolutely no way they get in over Auburn. It wouldn't even be an argument. I could see both getting in though

Clemson was coming off back to back 11-2 seasons and an orange bowl win against Ohio State when that game was scheduled

This. Head to head combined with winning the conference will have Bama sitting at home.

It would be an absolute farce if alabama made it to the playoffs while losing their conference. Even worse now than in 2011. It would be even worse if Auburn didn't make it too.

I don't think the Michigan/OSU winner is a debate. If OSU goes 12-1 and wins the conference, they are getting in over a 1 loss Bama. It would basically be the exact same scenario as 2015 where defending champ OSU got left out in much the same way
