easy answer, because its fun. The average hacker probably gets the most joy out of hitting a driver. It's all about that one BIG drive that keeps you coming back.
Almost every time you play there will be numerous short par 4's that you could hit a 5 iron off of and be in good shape. However most people will always hit driver because its fun, not because it was the smart move.

Sunday I missed 1 fairway and it was by less than a club length. I can get off the tee any time. However, I hit 9 balls fat that came up 30-50 yards short, bladed 3 wedges, and had 4 three putts.

I'm long with my 3 wood, get it our there with a decent amount of people's drivers. Most of it is just cause the manufacturer of my 3 wood is pretty hot.
I average nowhere near 290. To say that you do is ridiculous. Maybe one day day, downwind, on a fast and hard course you got it out there

I don't understand the logic here. I didn't say I shoot 65 every round. I didn't say I put it in the middle of the fairway every shot. I didn't say I hit a driver 340. I said I hit my three wood a long way. That's all. Grow up peter pan.

When I read these threads, I wonder where all of the concrete golf courses are around here. Because that's the only way anyone is averaging 290 with a 3 wood. Tiger Woods was consistently carrying his driver 290 last week, and people on this board were gawking over that (rightfully so).
