Do you mean 'bunt' or 'sacrifice'? If the batter is fast as blazes and can place the ball anywhere he wants and the opposing 3rd baseman is a clutz I'm bunting him in any situation.

Sacrifice bunting should be reserved for pitchers and situations where you only need 1 run. Outs in baseball are precious. Giving them up for free is rarely a good idea, which is backed up by the math.

Absolutely. Feel of the game and circumstances will always come into play. Sometimes one runs plays like 5 and sometimes 5 runs play like 1

The data suggests that in MLB the only time a sacrifice bunt is in order is when the pitcher is batting to avoid a double play.

quote:

Last season, according to Baseball Prospectus data, in the two most common situations for a sac bunt, your expectation for scoring a run was actually greater if you let the hitter swing away rather than give up an out via a bunt. With a runner at first and no outs, you had a 24.4 percent better chance of scoring a run than you did with a runner at second and one out. With runners at first and second and no outs, you had a 10.4 percent better chance of scoring a run than you did with runners at second and third and one out.

Bunting to move runners to 2nd or 3rd is terrible.

Bunting to hit or score a run is great and super underutilized. If you're good at it and the pitcher is a weak fielder its got to be a very high % play. Guys should of been bunting at Randy Johnson every single game
