combine for three national championships since the AP began selecting in 1936.

Michigan - 1948 AP
Washington - 1991 Coaches
Michigan - 1997 AP

Michigan has had many seasons where they were close to national title consideration but would lose the last game. Their 11 claimed national championships were mostly done in the early 1900s. Their real total is TWO heading into Monday’s CFPCG.

Washington does have a gripe for 1960 along with Missouri and Ole Miss. Washington should have been unanimous national champions in 1984 instead of “weak schedule” BYU. UDub shared the national title with Miami in 1991. Huskies should have faced Oklahoma for the 2000 NC, not Miami or FSU.

1998 BCSNCG combined for two national titles: 1951 Tennessee and 1993 FSU.

1999 BCSNCG combined for one national title: 1993 FSU.

2010 BCSNCG combined for one national title: Auburn 1957.

Here’s to Washington prevailing!!!

If I’m not mistaken. Nebraska should have played Michigan in 1997 for the title, but the Big 10 was tied to the Rose Bowl. Thankfully, the Rose Bowl has no real tie ins anymore.

Prior to the BCS in the late 90s, there were very few #1 vs. #2 bowl games that would go on to crown an undisputed national championship. The Big-10 and PAC had great teams that were locked into playing in the Rose Bowl. The Big-10 had a no-repeat rule. This policy denied several Big-10 and PAC teams from having a chance to play for a NC. What took so long?

Actually they'd probably post something lamenting 1998 Kansas State. We're by far the 2 posters that feel the strongest about that team.

Florida can thank the Rose Bowl committee for their first national title. In a just world, Arizona State plays Florida State for the title.

Michigan should be thankful for the Rose Bowl. That Nebraska team would have beaten the brakes off Michigan if they had played each other in a bowl game.

Just like Miami beat the brakes off Ohio St 5 years later or for that matter like Nebraska did to Miami in 83. Nebraska would have been favored we don’t know who would have won.

If Washington wins they will be the first time AP winner since the '96 Gators.

I was actually kind of surprised to learn that Washington has had a pretty solid history overall. Before looking them up, I figured they had zero national titles.

The same Nebraska team that needed a lucky "Fleakicker" to beat a 7-5 Mizzou?

I’m 55 and for a long time Washington under James was a really solid program. Always remember them being good just on the West Coast starting late with some real power teams out there at the time.

Do some research on college football. Winning national titles wasn't a goal. CFB was a regional sport. Winning your conference was the only goal.

Rose Bowl TV Contracts.

In fact, most of the reason we couldn’t have a playoff when we needed a playoff was because of ol Grandaddy.

one reason why I don't recognize ga tech's sham of a "title" in 1990.They got to play a team that was barely ranked in the top 20 for their bowl game
