The most runs by a team in the modern era was a Yankees squad from a few years later (1931). People forget that team because it didn't win the pennant.

I guess I presented the question wrong, I wasn't asking about best collection of names and reputations...I was asking statistically. 27 yanks were a little better in a couple of the core categories but that was with 1927 pitching

1997 statistically is a better lineup than 2001. 2001 was by far a better team though when factoring in pitching

Although it gets closer when you factor in the 97 team played in the kingdome and 01 played at safeco. I still would take 97 though in terms of firepower. 96 too
