C'mon...that is where we put our wild turkey at...everyone knows we have no National Championships, so they never check there and leave it alone

But in all seriousness, VT has always talked about winning the NC, but never backed it with actions until recently.

Unfortunately it is probably too late to do anything under Beamer...

Luckily the new AD is all in, but has the ship passed. This is from a Q&A in March:

AB: How has the offseason gone? I know you went to Ole Miss last week to meet with their defensive coaches.

BF: "Yeah, every year we try to go someplace. And Dave Womack who is the coordinator there, I’ve known for a long time. Our days go way back to when he was a defensive coordinator with Houston Nutt at Arkansas. And they’ve run and we run a similar package. And Dave was also the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. And that’s not the reason I went there. Because we didn’t really talk a whole lot about Georgia Tech, even though they played Georgia Tech and played them very well in the bowl game. We shared some ideas with that. We talked about what we did against Georgia Tech, then he showed me a couple things that he liked from someplace else. So those are things from that part of it.

"But we were looking at a couple little wrinkles. We’re going to do what we do, but always looking for a way to tweak things. They were interested in our robber coverage and concepts and a couple of things that we did, our zone pressures. I was looking at how they play a certain technique in quarters coverage. We’re looking at how they’re playing, because Ole Miss is like Auburn and Clemson and all those spread teams that are up tempo, so I wanted to talk to them about how they’re handling certain plays, how they’re handling certain formations, how they’re handling the up-tempo stuff with their calls and things of that nature.

"And then I wanted to look at their infrastructure. You know, it’s not just us tweaking our defense, but what you see out there is people have a lot of people in place to help in a lot of areas. And I’m not saying that’s right or wrong, but I think Virginia Tech or maybe we as the ACC -- I can’t speak for everybody in the ACC -- but I think if you probably did some research, it’d probably be interesting to see the amount of people we have in Virginia Tech to even the ACC."

AB: I think I’ve read that you’re one of the smallest football staffs personnel-wise?

BF: "Yeah, and in my opinion, this is just my opinion, we need to catch up because of recruiting. Not so much the quality control guys and the football part of it, but in the recruiting part of it, that’s where the Alabamas and even like Ole Miss, they’ve had the last two years, they’ve had two top-10 recruiting classes.

"And they’re making quality time for the coaches. Instead of the coaches trying to coach, trying to recruit, trying to … we’re wearing so many hats. Plus, trying to prepare or trying to get kids on the phone. There are only so many hours in the day. And that’s what I was interested in. What are some things that you feel like are from an infrastructure standpoint allowing you to be successful? And I think they’ve done a great job here the last couple years. They won seven games the first year and eight games last year? They beat LSU. They’re competitive. And they were able to sign a couple of the No. 1 kids in the country at a couple of positions.
"And to me, Ole Miss is no different than Blacksburg, Virginia. There’s not a lot different, other than they’re in the SEC. But I think the ACC is every bit as strong. And I know Virginia Tech, we’ve got a great tradition and great reputation. So I think there are some areas that I thought we could benefit from. At least things to talk about to see what direction we want to go or if we can go or whatnot. But that’s what I was looking at as much as anything, and facilities. You know, you’re always looking to see about a ‘wow’ factor and things of that nature. So those are things you look at. And what we have here, something they have that we could implement in our facility or in our program or in our scheme, whatever it may be."
