I hate to defend UVA, but I will.

People forget what a great job that Welshd did at Navy before UVA. He turned that program into a solid program.

So, when he came in, he was given time, and had the advantage of being the only school in VA in a conference. He also made some great asst coach hires, and recruited very well in PA and NJ. So he had great lineman (Dombrowski), better than average QBs (Majkowski (Sp?), Moore, etc).

Their decline started with VT ascending with Cornell Brown choosing VT which made the field even. But the ultimate downfall of Welsh was that in 98, VT went after Vick, and UVA went after Curry. It seemed at the time it would be a great commonwealth battle for years, but then Curry went to UNC and since then, it has been on the downslide.

And Welsh, even thought grumpy, still had a grandpa charm to him, that Al Groh did not. Groh recruited well, but his arrogance caught up with him. UVa held on too long, and then brought in someone who could not gameday coach in London.

So, if UVA starts to win again, the stadium will fill up.

But as our UVa friends have said on here, there AD and President need to be on board, as over the past decade, they have not.

That may be what started it but what sustained it is UVA being idiots and actively petitioning to have VPISU into the ACC. That brought the only other serious contender in the state to the stage of prominence and it went from there.

Thanks for the words tccdc.

The ACC was no where near as good a football conference back then.

Big 8, Big 10, SEC, PAC 10 and Southwest were all ahead back then (in no particular order).

Yep, plus a shitload of independents (most notably FSU, Miami, Penn State, and Notre Dame) who were much more attractive options for the Orange Bowl to take against the Big 8 winner (usually Nebraska or OU).

I believe the arse whooping in Charlottesville was on a rainy night

It started raining when their band played the national anthem and never stopped.

Nothing screams "nightmare" like having UVa frat daddies taking turns coming into your section screaming "Texas sucks"!in a high school stadium... and knowing they're right.

College football and their fans suck up here in Virginia. I unfortunately live here now and you wouldnt know college or even high school football is played here. I can go to a sports bar on Saturday and it will have a couple of people in there and go to the same bar on Sunday and it packed. If is almost as bad as the food in this state.

Because they were placed on probation. They could've still played in a bowl that year, but the 1985 team would've been ineligible. They went ahead and took the ban that year. In hindsight they'd probably accepted the 1982 Cotton, as the 1985 team went 6-5 and lost to Minnesota in the Independence Bowl. The 1982 team was 9-1-1.

Lol...there is a great college football in VA.

JMU Attendance - over 20k on a regular basis
VA Tech - 66k
W&M - 10k
Richmond - 8,700
UVA - 40k and they have no reason to go
Liberty - 18k
VMI - 6k

I could go on with smaller colleges like Emory and Henry.

You must be going to the wrong bars, because most places are packed on Saturday in Nova, Beach, etc for college football on Saturday.

I am comparing football and Virginia to football in Louisiana. I live 35 years in Louisiana and a decade here in Virginia. The passion for football from middle school to high school to college is not even close up here in Virginia.

Wasn't UVA basically forced to, by politicians?
I seem to remember that at first UVA was rightly against it, but Tech cried to Richmond.

Correct. The governor got involved. I'm sure there were some UVA people who wanted Tech in, though. Those people were dumb.

vt joining the acc during that realignment was the best thing that could have happened for the acc. otherwise, vt would be in the sec right now.
