A certain segment of them for sure. Just as they complain about a group that incessantly bashes soccer, there is a group of soccer fans that incessantly take jabs at other sports and try and minimize those that express even honest opinions in critique of soccer. It goes both ways. Hell, I've made light hearted jokes about soccer being boring only to stir up passionate anger in soccer enthusiasts who seem to get offended by anyone even mentioning that they might find the game boring.
There are def soccer fans with a chip on their shoulder. They're kind of like beer snobs, trying to make you believe that every match is the GOAT sporting event of all time, like this hoppy shite blueberry beer is exquisite. I like soccer because I started watching in the 90s and I have a really good friend from Birmingham U.K. who is an Aston Villa supporter. We are going to do a home and home, villa park and Tiger stadium.

I've given soccer a number of honest chances. I really want to like it but it just doesn't do it for me. Like many though, I will watch and cheer on the US in the World Cup and Olympics. And hell, I even got excited a few times during the Portugal game.

I'll never be a huge fan of watching soccer (I like to play it, though), but I will yell my fool head off for the USMNT/USWNT because I honestly want them to do well.
Basketball and hockey are more "beautiful games" to me, though.

Why are people this surprised and enamored by this? I understand the soccer vs basketball angle here in the USA. But it's a rooting interest for the entire fricking country instead a few specific cities. Plus it's the "group of death" and we have a legit shot to move forward. The ratings SHOULD be this good.

This is obvious, but obviously it needed to be stated, given the tenor of this thread.

Hilarious how in denial some of these ignorant assholes are. Take a second and watch a match without your prejudice and you'll understand why so many people are tuning in

I've watched about every World Cup match, and I hate soccer. Have enjoyed the shite out of it, and won some solid money off the games, too.
It's the World Cup, it's once every 4 years like the Winter/Summer Olympics. Hell we watch the shite out of CURLING because it's once every 4 years and it's the USA. Not a knock on soccer, just the truth, at least for me and probably most people.
World Cup is as rare as the Olympics and tons of people watch shite they couldn't care less about the next 3 years whether it's Water Polo or Curling or swimming or whatever else, because it's a rare event and it's the USA on the biggest stage.
I would never watch an MLS game or follow a team just because I'm not a big soccer fan and the league is shitty and 2nd/3rd rate compared to the top leagues. I saw an article a few months ago that ranked the top soccer leagues in the world and the MLS was 10th. I relate that to being Canadian and going to watch/follow the CFL. Overseas they laugh at how shitty the MLS is while they have the top players and leagues, and for american football we have the NFL and college and even HS that shits on say the CFL that we all make fun of.

I like how this is a defense against people who don't like soccer. Why is someone ignorant if they aren't big fans?

The reason so many people tuned in because it is the world cup. The US was coming off a great win against Ghana. Plus the other team features one of the few players in the country that even soccer ignorant people would know about.

Because a lot of them are being ignorant. I understand soccer isn't appealing to a lot of people, and that's fine. But there are people that feel the need in every soccer thread to talk about how much of a pussy queer sport it is. We get it, you don't like the sport, no reason to be a douche about it (not talking about you, just some of the other tards like the idiot on page 1).
That being said there are a lot of huge soccer fans that have been trying to ram it down everyone's throat.
I guess I fall somewhere in the middle. I like the world cup and wouldn't mind watching it more often, I just don't have a team to follow and have no idea how to go about picking a team.

I think the bandwagon is high because the Team USA Soccer bandwagon might be bigger than the Heat... in fact is.
Most Americans don't care about soccer, hell they don't even care about their own country, but something that unites people and gives them an excuse to party, they're all over that bandwagon.
There is a lack of genuinity to the patriotism most Americans display... it's hard to be a fan of this country given it's shady history anyway.

Can a thousand people legally be in the Varsity?
The place I watched the Ghana match in, here in Lexington, was well over capacity. I even made the comment that if the place caught fire, we'd all be in serious trouble. It was a blast, but I watched the Portugal match at home, on Univision, because Time Warner is the WORST.

No. Not even man. Who do you think plays in the CFL? Maybe the very top college teams would be on par but High Schools dude? Not a chance.

I'm the same way. I love the World Cup and will watch most the national games, but I struggle with just picking a random team overseas to cheer for.

I like how Univision is being added in, when no other sport does that. Can we include the Canadian television networks when discussing hockey now too?
Well Univision is an American network so your argument hold no water.
