Yes they do. Revenue - expenses = profit. Who cares if USA/Troy have less revenue than UAB if their profit from football is higher?

All true. This won't end with football either. You know how scared Bama is of UAB athletics? Around the same time they nixed the Jimbo hire, there was a basketball player at Bama who was from Birmingham and wanted to transfer UAB. They released him to transfer to any school EXCEPT UAB. How does that benefit Bama? It certainly isn't a competitive threat, Bama is too scared to play UAB in basketball. The only time they've faced off is when they were forced to in the NIT in the early 90s and UAB beat Bama.

That seems petty if you ask me. If I recall it was a kid that wasn't getting playing time at Bama anyway. You would think a school would want what's best for a kid. Isn't that why schools exist in the first place?

UAB subsidizes $20 million of the roughly $30 million annual athletic department operating budget. Over the next five years, the difference between eliminating the football program and maintaining a competitive Conference USA program equates to $49 million, the report estimates.
Some have suggested that philanthropic support could help sustain UAB football, said Allen Bolton, the vice president of Financial Affairs. An internal analysis refuted that notion. Private giving in years past has hovered around $2 million, which suggests donations could not realistically support the program, Bolton said.
He said the University of Alabama system's Board of Trustees was not involved, despite widespread speculation to the contrary.
Watts believes the impact on recruitment will be modest, causing few prospective students to reconsider UAB because football isn't the main draw.
He highlighted recent additions or plans for construction on campus - the new Hill Student Center and a new residence hall for freshmen - as successes.
"Our undergraduates have different backgrounds," he said. "This is an urban campus with a vibrant undergraduate community. Attendance at football games has not been a major part of their activities."

Yeah it's not like CUSA had anything to do with higher revenue. It's not popularity.

Troy- 18,906
