IRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — UAB football can take the field again in 2017 and remain an FBS program. Athletic director Mark Ingram said Tuesday that rifle will return in the upcoming season, while bowling will compete in 2016-17 and football in two years.

UAB dropped all three sports in December to cut costs and announced six months later they would be reinstated.

Ingram says the NCAA has told UAB that football can resume in 2017 and remain in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The NCAA won't subject UAB to FBS requirements for three academic years beginning with 2015-16.

The Blazers would be eligible immediately for postseason play and a Conference USA title.

Bear Jr and his boys already did the damage. They essentially gave the program the death penalty. Who is going to want to play there?

This will be big in birmingham leading up to and including 2017. By 2018, no one will care again.

It really is a shame because they actually had some very good players that transferred out. UGA's backup MLB and a WR that should start for Louisville are UAB transfers.

As for who will play there, a Memphis players announced his intention to transfer to UAB last week.

I have faith in Bill Clark. It'll be rough at first beause obviously it's going to take a few years to build he roster. If they actually give Clark time to work his magic before they start saying "I told you so" then Clark is the man to get this job done.

Cody Clements who is penciled in as the starter for South at QB is a UAB transfer.

I think we got about eight players from up there. The OC had been here before though, Bryant Vincent, he's back.

Most of the students were already Bama or Auburn fans.

The gumps are still mad they weren't able to bully another program out of existence.

Yes and no. You are probably right in thinking that most UAB students and fans are Bama/Auburn fans. However, you are wrong in thinking that the 2 are mutually exclusive. They can be fans of UAB and Bama/Auburn fans. I know it blows your gump mind that not everyone worships Bama 24/7.
