I know a Tulane friend who attended practice today. he said the WR's look great - lots of speed. DJ Banks should make an impact as a froshman at WR. Also, said a RB from St Aug named Tillman made the grades and joined the team today. He said Kemp struggled some and had trouble with accuracy. Kemp will be the key this year so hopefully he just had an off day.

LSU's Russell, Tulane's Banks will play - but where? - neworleans.com

- Multi-talented quarterbacks in high school. A chance to play QB at their college of choice, but likely not right away. Too talented to keep on the sidelines as a true freshman. Such is the plight of LSU coach Les Miles when it comes to Russell Shepard, and of Tulane coach Bob Toledo with D.J. Banks.

- A day earlier, Toledo described Banks, who led West Monroe to the Class 5A state title game last December in the Superdome, as “an explosive guy. He’s quick and he’s fast. He’s got great hands. You’ll see him in a lot of different positions. He’ll return punts and kickoffs. We need to get the ball in his hands because he can make plays.”
- If early practices are an indication, Banks may line up primarily at receiver and have a big role on special teams.
- Banks seems to have a little idea about 2009, or at least was willing to tip his hand. “I see myself at (wide receiver),” he said Saturday. “But I’ll do whatever the coaches want me to do. I just want to help build a program and make Tulane a powerhouse.”

- I guess what it comes down to is this: When you see No. 10 in purple and gold or No. 5 in green and white on the field this fall, watch out. Anything is possible.

Tulane Recruiting: 17 down, but more on the radar - neworleans.com
Excerpt:
With room left before Tulane reaches the maximum number of signees at 25, here are some of the prospects who could come into the fold:
-OL Luke Charpentier (6'4-290) John Curtis
-WR Jaron Miller (6'4-200, 4.65) Warren Easton: Tulane, Southern Miss, South Alabama and Northwestern State are in the fray.
-WR Armand Williams ( 6'3-189, 4.5) Slidell: Tulsa is in Tulane's backyard again for Williams, but the Wave have a shot, with ULM, USM and Northern Illinois jockeying for attention.
-OL Mason Hathaway (6'5-268) Southlake, Texas: Athletic prospect has an offer on the table from Bob Toledo.
-DE Charles Green (6'4-220) Seminole High in Sanford, FL: It appears to have come down to a Tulane-New Mexico tug-o-war.

This is a strange place for this topic, but I guess since it's not the "rant" it's okay.

Tulane football team counting on former Karr duo of Shakiel Smith, Jordan Sullen - Times-Picayune
- Forty-one freshmen, including redshirts, dot Tulane's 95-player roster -- approximately 43 percent of the program.
- ...one of about 20 freshmen vying for playing time this season. Smith, a defensive back, and former Karr teammate Jordan Sullen, a wide receiver, are two of the newest Green Wave players to make an immediate impression.
- There is a reason many of these freshmen chose the Green Wave. Smith, 17, wanted to play immediately and spurned an offer from Kansas State because of talk of him redshirting.
- The defense, learning a new system and dealing with injuries, is making up ground on the offense.
- Freshmen are no small part of the immediate future for Tulane's offense and defense. "That's part of building a program, and I know last year people got frustrated, and I know we had injuries, and you hate to use injuries as an excuse. Like I said, we played 12 true freshmen (last season)," Coach Bob Toledo said. "We're trying to build a foundation, and it's getting better. I don't know what that means in wins and losses, but we're building a football team."

It is Tulane/LA football talk on an LSU discussion forum, so I completely understand.

Another in-depth article by the Times-Picayune's Ms. Tammy Nunez ( 2008 LA Sports Writer Award Winner):

Tulane's Steve Stanard has a simple approach when it comes to defense - Times-Picyaune
- As the offense sputtered last season and the defense held its own early on, a rift formed between the two sides.
- "I think morale just started to crumble, " Toledo said on media day. "We weren't a team, so to speak. We were an offense and a defense. It's really the first time in my career that we kind of divided a little bit. Part of it was the offense couldn't score points, but the defense couldn't stop them, and it became that way, and then I think we got too complex."
- Stanard arrived in New Orleans in January shortly after former coordinator O'Neill Gilbert's release in December 2008.
- Stanard spent the spring discarding much of the excess, convincing players everything would be fine with his notched-down 4-3 base defense and moving in the new goods.
- Stanard has slowly been adding his twists to the 4-3, putting a heavy emphasis on angles and containment. It's a key concept in any defense but particularly important for a team that might not match up at every position with opponents in speed.
- "I think you will see a more aggressive defense, no doubt. We'll blitz our fair amount, and we'll play solid base defense, " Stanard said. "But I think the thing you'll see is 11 guys running to the football, and 11 guys playing hard snap after snap for four quarters and competing for four quarters."

Staying healthy key for Tulane - The Advocate
- [In 2008] The Green Wave got off to an encouraging start — narrowly losing to nationally ranked Alabama and East Carolina before beating Louisiana-Monroe and SMU. Then a series of season-ending injuries, ultimately totaling 17, left it limping badly — literally and figuratively — to the end of the season.
- The return to health of injured starters, the experienced gained by the neophytes, and the addition of an athletic freshman class comprise what Toledo calls the best team he has had in his three seasons.
- “If we stay healthy, we have a chance to be a very competitive football team,” Toledo said. “I feel good about the talent at all positions, and we have quality depth at more positions. Now, we’ve got to get it done on the field. I think we’re going to surprise a lot of people this year.”

Sidis, does it concern you that Tulane only has one commit from New Orleans? Can Tulane compete and win while getting basically nothing out of its backyard?

If the talent necessary to compete is available, I think most fans are not too concerned where the talent hails from (FL, GA, NY, TX, etc.).
That said, Tulane fans obviously recognize the importance of establishing a strong relationship w/ LA high schools, coaches, etc.

Entering only his 3rd season, Toledo's staff has done a great job building relationships and laying a foundation in Louisiana (annual summer camps throughout LA, etc.) - and has rec'd promising results:
- 2009 (24 total commits): 4 Metro NOLA commits and a total of 8 LA commits (33%).
- 2010 (17 total commits - so far): 2 Metro NOLA commits (including NOLA native/ current TX resident Brent Comardelle) and a total of 8 LA commits (47%).
Coach Toledo has voiced an interest in securing LA recruits and we can only hope that our current/future classes include a significant number of talented LA recruits.

I wish Tulane the best of course, but those percentages just seem a little low. There's a ton of talent in New Orleans. Guys like Damaris Johnson and Rufus Porter. You can win with those guys.

We have to win more games if we want to get a legitimate shot at the ones who can get in. Many of those guys also see a shot to get away from home, which is quite understandable.

I completely agree.
2010 recruiting isn't over - let's see how it plays out.
Again, due to the 'rebuilding', I'm more concerned about getting the best players available - LA or not.

Getting in and staying in can be real issues.

Which, as you admit, is no more.

Additionally, after 2002, football was not allowed to use as many exemptions. Toledo got that relaxed A LITTLE BIT, but there are FAR fewer "barely eligible" athletes at Tulane than you think.

And as Sidis pointed out, getting in and staying in are two different things.
