As a born Long Islander who was a Mets/Giants/Islanders fan until my family moved to Florida in 1990 when I was 9, here is how the fan base mostly breaks down.

Mets Fans: Queens, or Long Island residents who are mostly Jewish, Irish, or Eastern European (see Kevin James, Jim Breuer, and Jerry Seinfeld) and those old farts who were displaced Brooklyn Dodger or New York Giants fans who are still living.

Yankee Fans: Anywhere else in the city (Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan), North Jersey, Upstate, and parts of Connecticut. Mostly Italians and Hispanic residents of Long Island and Queens. Bandwagon jumpers like my cousins who grew up on Long Island cheering for the Mets in the 80s and then jumped ship to the Yankees in 1996. Bandwagon fans who aren't from the New York Metro area and can't name 5 retired players outside of Ruth, Mantle, and Jeter and only know Phil Rizzuto as The Money Store guy.
