If I were the Thunder's coach I would have moved Westbrook to 2 guard a long time ago, but I don't know if that would solve his overshooting problem.

I honestly thought this was a sarcastic thread and it was giving RW props for carrying the Thunder tonight.

I did too. Upon clicking I was horribly confused

How on earth can people still not see how valuable Westbrook is to the Thunder? They would have lost by 20 tonight if not for him.

I agree 100% and am a westbrook fan, but he has also shot themselves out of games and had some bad, out of control turnovers or drives to the basket. That's the only reason why I think some people would say they should trade him

I don't think they should tho

I love Westbrook and think he's a freak talent but he simply doesn't know when to look to his teammates. And I believe that's why they will fall short eventually (although I think Brooks' lack of offense will be why). Like I said if I'm wrong I will be happy, but these are just my observations at this point. We'll see.

Over the 5 games in this series:

- Westbrook has 20 turnovers; Durant has 19.

- Westbrook is shooting 52% from the field to Durant's 45%, 40% from 3 to Durant's 32%, and 86% at the line to Durant's 85%

So their turnover rate is practically identical despite Westbrook handling the ball more, Westbrook is scoring far more efficiently and pouring in almost 30 a night, all while maintaining over 8 assists a game.

The complaints about him not looking for his teammates or shooting too much are certainly unfounded in this series.

The turnovers are a legitimate gripe, but it's definitely a team-wide issue. Hell, the MVP only has 1 less turnover than he does in the entire series.

The average basketball fan has no clue how valuable Westbrook is to the Thunder. He carried them for 4 quarters last night, and his only highlight on Sportscenter was the 3 FTs.

This has been probably his best playoff series of his career, but you can only appreciate if you are watching the games.

It's silly becaue OKC simply doesn't run sets. The normal guys on the court of Thabo/Ibaka/Perk have no ability to create and basically the second they touch the ball they're passing it right back out.

So the only real option is to pass to KD. And as we know and has been talked about a lot, KD can still sometimes struggle to get open against physical defenders.

So what's left is...Westbrook pounding the ball and dribbling way more than any other player and having possessions where he and only he touches the ball and takes a shot.

That's not to say he isn't a little too trigger happy, but I think more of the blame goes to the scheme/players than it does to Westbrook most of the time.

Yep. It is basically "KD, Russ beat your man and make something happen." Because they can both usually get whatever shot they want, it usually works.

The "he needs to be SG and they need a real PG" ideas are stultifying. I'm going to list all the players in the league (that played at least 41 games) that have a higher AST% than he does:

Paul
Rondo
Kendall Marshall (thanks, Mike!)
Wall

And that is it. Westbrook also has a solid TO% for a guy that uses so many possessions.

He has holes, but he is an elite shot creator- for himself and for teammates. Why in the world would you want to take the ball out of his hands?

I think the issue is they are both primary scorers who need a lot of touches to get going. They are quite similar offensively in that they can both get whatever shot they want from anywhere on the court because they are both freakishly athletic. The problem is Westbrook is a shoot first point guard on a team that would greatly benefit from a pass first point guard. I love both players, but I'm not sold on Westbrook being the long term answer for OKC at the pg position.

The problem is the label we've put on him, not with his passing as detailed above.

He is listed at pg, ergo he must play like the platonic ideal of PG. That is utter bullshite.

This is probably the most correct thing said in this thread.

I don't know exact percentages, but OKC runs primarily an ISO offense with some PnR's for KD and Westbrook mixed in between.

If they still had Harden, Rondo would be a nice fit, there's no way the Thunder do this now. Westbrook is one of the most exciting players in the league.
