exactly

there are some games where achieving a very high skill level early is utterly important

2 that come to mind are hockey and soccer

baseball, football, basketball, aren't like this. if you play these sports young, you won't need advanced technique until about high school. you just need a basic understanding of the game and basic fundamentals

and tournament baseball pretty much takes away the time needed to play these sports. it blows my mind

And if you are on a HS team, most coaches worth anything will have things for you to do voluntarily in the off season that I would think would improve your game more than some person coaching you on a travel team.
it was highly recommended for us to attended LSU, Miss St and Florida St camps

even here in LC, where SLC Baseball reigns supreme (with unreal results), tourney teams are starting to sprout up

the last SLC champ (the team who went to the LLWS) was a tourney team who entered SLC just that year for a shot to go to the LLWS

well they're not bad people. their dad is like a lil sports dictator who super trains his sons with rigid accuracy

i played them in a 3-on-3 game once and he had his 7 and 9 year old (give or take) setting picks and running a complex offensive system...in 3-on-3 in his front yard

LLWS is big time here. it's our heritage

SLC trains the kids. the all stars do well in the LLWS. then those kids go on to play for BHS

LL is the only one with name recognition, but it's not nearly the best competition

oh yeah

as a former LL pitcher who was forbidden to throw breaking pitches, it really does blow my mind

At least the kids in the LLWS have earned the right to play in Williamsport. I know 3 13 year olds that all play for different travel teams that said their team won the national championship. High school is a good age to start playing a high number of games. Before that you are just stealing their childhood.

i didn't learn how to throw a curve until my friend (who was a beastly pitcher and was pitching in college at the time) came back into town and we spent an afternoon hanging out and tossing the ball

and i was an all star pitcher (but not in SLC. in the "minor" leagues)

it's not hard to teach kids a changeup...I threw one at that age and if I had thrown a breaking ball it wouldn't have been fair

they'd do the kids such a service by teaching changeups...then they'd really have to learn how to pitch

I had a dad brag to me that his 10 year old threw 85 pitches in one game. I told him this was a form of child abuse. He thought I was nuts, but maybe he believes me now that at 13 the boy can hardly lift his arm.

some parents see the first TJ as just 1 necessary hurdle in their kid's pro future. seriously

being a kid in the early 90s and idolizing Greg Maddux, i was all over trying to throw a cutter

i thought i was awesome but then it was ruined for me when the coaches told me that i had natural movement as a lefty as it had nothing to do with my "pressure points" on my pitches
