Time to Step Up Against Youth Sport Specialization

Dr. James Andrews speaks up
We are beyond the time to slow down the Club Sports Machine.
The year round play/grind on the young bodies is simply hurting far more players than it is helping.
Additionally, many HS programs are suffering from lack of available players as they (more accurately their parents) are lured by these club coaches touting their college connections/promises of a college offer by forcing players to travel to too many super tournaments to play marathon weekends of games.
Take a look at their "results". Is every senior in their club signed to a college program with scholly $ attached to their offer? Or are there more kids burnt out & going "wild" in their undergraduate years because they never got the chance to let loose in HS?
Club programs were created in an effort to provide more players with the opportunity to get a chance to see the field in an effort to execute their abilities that they might not see during the competition season. But NOT to give every kid a participation trophy. Playing time was & should be the reward.
Also the clubs provide coaches an opportunity to get more involved in the sport(s) & hone their skills in an effort to find a job with a school program or just give back to their community. NOT for the best of the best of the local area to load up & play against other local area bests week in & week out. That's what the in-season school program playoffs are for.

As a father of a two year old, I'm already dreading these decisions if he decides to play sports once growing older.

James Andrews sounds like a pussy.
Play Ball

It is never going to happen. As long as colleges can go out and watch the kids on the summer circuit it will not change. The colleges will not stop. Take basketball for example. Nike and Adidas have major AAU basketball teams that travel all over the country in the summer. If the colleges stop recruiting over the summer it hurts those two companies. Who are major sponsors of college athletics, Nike and Adidas. Not to mention that now NBA players have teams. It's not stopping.

Agree with Dr Andrews in a lot of cases. Particularly when it's the loser parents pushing it to make up for their own inadequacies.

Yeah I see a lot of dad's pushing their daughters to be the babe Ruth of softball day in and day out when the girls really just want to be normal kids. Travel ball, school ball, city ball, all stars. Give it a rest. They're kids.

That's 90% of travel ball trash

naw brah they're just trying to get their kids a scholarship in baseball (so 0.3 of a scholarship), because they're from LA and it's impossible to afford college in LA with our low tuition and TOPS and what not

Key word: summer
You can play AAU ball and still play other sports.

playing soccer can only help you in football and basketball, other sports can help you

I'm that guy that's convinced his kid is special
No specialization though. No pushing either. If he doesn't want to play something, its no big deal.

said this since I was in HS, kids need time off and need to play other sports. it allows bodies to strengthen other muscles and gives shoulders a break.

Which sports exactly though? Unlikely that you can travel the country playing basketball, baseball, attend camps-pretty much mandatory if you want an offer from LSU, and 7 on 7 with your school, much less these All Star teams.
I am not an advocate of specialization, but it's damn near impossible not to now once you reach your junior year of high school.

Kids should play one sport per season. Doesn't matter which. Your chances of making it in D1 anything for something significant are slim. Do it to be active and learn teamwork.

If you're playing for Nike and Adidas AAU teams, I think you have a great shot at playing D1.

Just leave out baseball. Problem solved.

AAU, 7v7, and track have major conflicts. You're right about that. Almost impossible to manage.
