exactly slackster gets it, 2008 dwight howard could have been wilt chamberlain too if he played at that time. People always wanna give the historical guys some kinda edge its bs. Bob Cousy would not sniff the court in the NBA much less be a hall of famer, good lord id love to watch the legend cousy try to lock down russell westbrook

bothers me that Bernard King is never mentioned in threads like this.

Are you implying that Bernard King is one of the top 10 greatest players in NBA history?

ust that in the playoffs Duncan had better numbers head to head
except he really didnt. the only time you can actually definitively say tim had better numbers than shaq did in a playoff series was in 2002

Today's athletes are light years ahead and its not even close. How about all those great 60s and 70s point guards vs todays guys???

You can't judge players athleticism fairly when they are in different eras

If Wilt or Russell were born in the 90s they would be more athletic than they were then. Training, supplements, technology etc. play a huge part

No one you're calling out has said wilt or Russel wouldn't be great now or they weren't great then. And we're the ones who need to be checked out?

I've seen it. I also have the ability to adjust for the ridiculous pace of that era and the indisputable fact that their peers often couldn't hold a candle to today's players.

shite happens. Life goes on. Previous Spurs team to set a franchise record for wins didn't win it all either (2006).

I fail to see what that has to do with you putting words in my mouth and not calming your shrill arse down, ol' sport

Plenty of archived old games. What passed for defense in those days is absolutely laughable compared to today's NBA.

Ironically, just sticking to the highlights would bolster your case.

in 2001 shaq got 27/13 and tim got 23/12. advantage shaq

in 2002 shaq got 21/12, tim got 29/17. advantage tim

in 2003 shaq got 25/14, tim got 28/12. thats a wash

in 2004 shaq got 23/15, tim got 21/12. advantage shaq

You can't just throw players around in different eras. Athletes evolve and get bigger, stronger, faster.

This thread is going multiple ways.

Top 10 in history for a career... Or Top 10 at any given point in a career.

I mean... For God's sake.... You have fools in this thread including Dwight Howard LMAO...,in the same breath as the great Bill Russell.

At his best, Bernard King was a scoring machine. Injury ruined him.

Fair enough, but it is incredibly dense for someone to argue guys like Thurmond and Petit could be dropped into this league and do anything other than orchestrate elaborate bench celebrations.

Exactly. Wilt was dunking from free throw lines then. Pretty sure he could do it now.

explain

Bird's career averages (including late career decline) were 24.3/10.0/6.8/1.7

Durant WITHOUT a late career decline yet is 27.4/7.0/3.7/1.0

Bird was a much better rebounder (even being 2 inches shorter) and passer, and his worst career defensive efficiency rating in a season was better than Durant's best. Bird almost won the MVP and Defensive MVP together 1984.

Bird was unquestionably the most well rounded perimeter player before Jordan and Lebron. There's people who still call him the best in that regard because of his rebounding and passing for his size. Nearly 7 assists a game as a 6'9" SF in the 80s is insane.

Is it ridiculous? Howard's per 100 possession numbers are notably better than someone like Nate Thurmond, who in turn compares favorably to Bill Russell.

You've seen Dwight play - he's an inch taller and 50 pounds heavier than Bill Russell, yet you think he'd be significantly worse?
