Theo Epstein - GOAT

Theo Epstein was hired by the Cubs as President of Baseball Operations in October of 11. They've gone from the worst to the best in baseball in that time. Here's a little something to show the progress. It's pretty incredible.

Which guys on the team of significance did he not draft or sign?

I think Baez is old regime. That's about it.

Every single active player was acquired after he was hired.

You are correct. He was drafted 2011. I stand corrected.

And Matt Szczur (2010)
Pretty impressive. If he wins a title, there's no question he's the GOAT.

Theo's work with the Cubs is far more impressive than his work with the Red Sox when he inherited a loaded 93-win team with Manny Ramirez, Pedro Martinez, Johnny Damon and Jason Varitek. Pretty much the entire Cubs team has been built by him. I can't name a single key guy left over from the Hendry regime. It's been a brilliant run.

Between his work with Boston and now in Chicago there's no question he's the best in the business IMO

If the guy can end an 86 year drought and a 108+ year drought, hard to say he's not GOAT

Billy Beane says hello. Give Beane the kind of money Theo has had and he would build a dynasty.

At a minimum he goes in the HOF.

Take a young Barry Zito, Tom Hudson and Mark Mulder away from Billy Beane and how incredible has he really been? I think he's good but they haven't been able to sustain success since those guys left. I realize he has a tough job, but he's not the only GM out there who does.

Without Billy Beane there is no Theo Epstein. He invented him. I still will never understand why Billy didn't cash in on it, but I guess there's more to life than just sports for some. Got to respect that.

quote:Don't forget Jason McCleod. Two of the biggest moves made by these two were trading Andrew Cashner for Anthony Rizzo and acquiring Jake Arrieta (and key bullpen arm Pedro Strop) from the Orioles for Steve Clevenger and Scott Feldman. What an unbelievable job they've done since then, compiling talent upon talent in the minors in not only revamping the talent pool but reinventing the organization's approach in defense, offense and pitching.
Pretty much the entire Cubs team has been built by him.
They should also get credit for bringing over Chris Bosio, who should get a shite ton of credit for his work with Jake Arrieta, Jason Hammel, Kyle Hendricks, Pedro Strop, Hector Rondon and Justin Grim (and to lesser extents Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood and Clayton Richard).

That Jason Hayward signing was definitely a shrewd, underrated move
Yes I realize no one can be perfect but I just once again want to show that I was right. And I'll give myself an upvote to contend with the swarm of downvotes coming my way.

Can't forget about Jed Hoyer either. I think the most impressive thing he's done has been the Anthony Rizzo project. When he was in Boston, he drafted Rizzo. When he went to San Diego, he traded for Rizzo. When he came to Chicago, he once again traded for Rizzo. He saw something in him and wanted to build a team around him; they have done just that.

Sounds like a future 30 for 30 - "The one man that believed Rizzo and the rings that they won"

I don't think you can definitively judge an eight year contract after three months.
