I think every major is on network tv

The Players always wasn't on Mother's Day. It used to be in March, just switched 8-10 years ago.

Television is what made the Players not the other way around.

reason the British Open came into American sports thinking was Palmer went there and won it. Thing is is the Players a major to others worldwide? No, and people seem to forget that it isn't just American public that decides if it's a major.

Good point. In fact, a couple of years ago, several European players, including Mcilroy and I believe Luke Donald when he was a top 5 player in the world skipped the Players because the European PGA Championship was the following week.

Still amazing courses and set ups for the PGA.

Probably has a lot to do with why The Players isn't a major. The pros can't bomb it all over the course at TPC Sawgrass and grow frustrated with it. They want to hit driver-wedge into the green with par-3's mixed in and maybe one par-4 that requires a 3-wood off tee. That's today's style.

Who decides?

I don't think anyone can answer this directly, but my guess is each current major is put on by one of golf's governing bodies (USGA, PGA of America, and the R&A) plus the Masters which has its own history of inviting the best players in the world to play there.

The PGA Tour doesn't have the prestige of any of the aforementioned groups to get the Players to be a major.

Today was as exciting as any major in the last few years.

I love that's it's played on different courses every year. Different strokes I guess.

Thing is this isn't a thread or convo if Fowler doesn't go off and go -8 on last 10 holes.

Agreed. It was very entertaining golf no doubt. You can't just invent a major though. It's the same concept as Trump buying up a course, throwing money into it, and claiming it should host a major.

The PGA has one of my favorite traditions. I love that the first 3 major winners of the year get paired for the first 2 days.

Discussion of The Players being a major has been going on for several years.

For the record, I made this same statement the other day before the tournament started...

It's a very special tournament, but it's not a major. The majors aren't contrived, they became majors organically. They have pedigrees and have deep history. There have been several tournaments that have been considered "major" at different times in Golf History... The Western Open, The North and South. If you want to start calling the Players a major, you'd have to decide if it starts being a major now, or if you'd retro the past winners. And if you do that, you probably need to count Hagen's 4 Western Opens and Hogan's Hale America and North and South. The U.S. AM was considered a major even up until Jack won his two.. It'd be a mess.

Again, I think it's special enough to call out as a separate thing... For example:

Freddy Couples has 15 PGA Tour Wins, a Major Championship and Two Players.

In my personal career rating system, it goes like this:

PGA Tour Win=1pt
WGC, U.S. AM=2pts
Players=3 pts
Major=4pts

golf is dying, there should be fewer majors, not more.

Peak interest? The players have plenty of interest in the PGA.
