Not sure why Smith would have the ball in his hands in the first place in that scenario. I'm sure if he were to go to someone like the Mavs, they'd let it be known what his role would be. He wouldn't even start.

Jonathan Feigen just tweeted that the Rockets will have interest if (when) Smith clears waivers.

i still have faith in j smoove. some team is gonna take a chance and get rewarded. unless he ends up on the kings, which will be awesome but is probably a bad idea.

Woj is reporting the same thing. Also seeing reports that Mavs and Kings are frontrunners.

This will be very intriguing; quality players like this never hit the open market mid-season. The Cavaliers, Clippers, Rockets, and Mavericks could all use him. Josh freaking Smith is going to impact the championship picture. This is a huge upgrade for any team that signs him to play PF.

The Pistons would rather pay him 5.2 million a year for 5 years to play somewhere else than have him there.

I'm not sure he is a "quality Player" or a huge upgrade anymore.

I'm not saying the dude is an All-Star, but Detroit is a hell hole. Both Josh and the franchise needed a split, but let's not act like the dude is chopped liver. A motivated Smith could be a good player on a playoff team.

I can't remember the last athlete that I had such a love/hate relationship for. Some of the things he does on the court just amazes you and then there are things he does that just make you go what the frick?!

Case in point (the good):

You don't think he could be valuable to a team? He still has real skills - solid handle for his size, good around the rim, athletic. He'd start for Houston if they signed him.

Josh gets into trouble when he drifts around the perimeter which he had to do in Detroit. And I understand the team cutting him. If they want to re-sign Monroe, then they would always have the Josh problem. Stretching him will be like a drop in the bucket with the new CBA and salary cap.

I dont want him even now. He's had a terrible year shooting the ball, especially more terrible than previous years....

This from ESPN...

quote:

Smith was on pace to be the first NBA player to shoot below 40 percent on field goals and below 50 percent on free-throw attempts while taking at least 12 shots per game, according to ESPN Stats & Information.

SVG cut a lot of that out...his perimeter attempts are way down this year. His major issue is that he isn't finishing around the rim at all...now you have a player with no shooting range who can't finish at the basket...and can't make a FT either.

Right now he is a situational bench player who can fill up the stat sheet for 20-25 minutes a night off the bench. If he is willing to embrace that role on a contender, he can be a real asset for any of the Western Conference teams trying to find an edge.

I think this is a huge blessing for J. Smith. If I were him, I'd shut it down until sometime in March and then see which one of the top 3 seeds need me the most. The only way he makes any extra money now is through playoff pay. Might as well pick the one that is going to make the deepest run and maybe get a ring. Then I'd do the same thing for the next 4-5 seasons. Wait until sometime in March and pick the best team/fit. You already have your money guaranteed and no one is going to pay you above/beyond. Why play a bunch of meaningless games?

A lot of that has to do with playing out of position and Brandon Jennings being his pg.

if the pistons didn't have greg monroe, josh smith would be in a much better position and wouldn't be released

It still seems like he's still shooting too much. The Rockets are an extremely perimeter oriented team, and a guy like that has no business taking 3 pointers. We'd have to have a really really really strong commitment to playing in the paint, and playing in the paint ALONE. I literally want 0 3 point shots from that guy. I'd rather Ariza go 3/10 than have him shoot. If he can do everything Terrence Jones did, except not shoot 3's then I'd be okay. Terrence Jones is actually decent at 3's and I didn't mind at all when he got an open look.

He hasn't really been playing the 3 all that much this year...nowhere near the amount he did last year.

Well you might be right. Luckily he wouldnt be getting a fat contract. I just dont want to risk missing out on Dragic. I think he's worth a shot though if it doesnt put that in jeopardy. Especially considering the Rockets PF depth currently. Honestly he's not much different than Joey Dorsey at this point, and offers more than Dorsey.
