There’s a lot of infuriating things happening in the world and in the world of sports right now. But for me, what has to be near the top of the list, at least in the top five, is this…

Commercial. Touchback. Commercial.

You know those interminable points in an NFL game after a team goes on a long drive and scores either a touchdown or a field goal and the network has to make up for lost time when it comes to commercial breaks? And then you come back from said commercial break to see one completely meaningless play because Roger Goodell is doing everything he can to take the kickoff out of the game. And then what happens? Do you return to football action? No. You get… another commercial break.

Brian Rolapp, NFL Media executive VP and NFL Network president and CEO, said the NFL could look at changing up some rules of the game to make the viewing experience better for fans. Specifically, the NFL could look to follow in the footsteps of Major League Baseball and speed up the pace of play.

Via Broadcasting & Cable:

Yet, Rolapp said, “we don’t blame everything on the election” and believes viewership ultimately comes down to whether games can hold consumers’ attention.

Picking up the pace is one option, he said.

“Could they be shorter? Could they be better? Are replays too long?” he said. “We are constantly look at those things to make the pace of the games more interesting.”

The league is also “looking very hard” at changing the way it commercializes broadcasts, as running up to 70 ads per game can be a turnoff, he said. “In a world where Netflix has no commercials and consumers are used to 15 seconds of of pre-roll, is there a better way to do commercials with our broadcast partners?”

There's nothing worse in college and Pros then...

Timeout
TD
TV timeout
Kickoff
TV timeout
Timeout

Why do teams need a timeout after a TV timeout?

They don't like what they see on the field? They are running low on the play clock? They wanted to see what the other team was rolling out first?

Regular timeouts are not the problem, its 100% the TV timeouts that frick it all up.

They never have a TV timeout after a kickoff in college football.

That's not true, it happened with some of the games this past weekend. I thought of the MSB when it happened.

It's pretty simple. Stop focusing on political bullshite. We're there to be entertained. Re-evaluate the penalties. Cut the commercials down and stop penalizing / fining players for having fun.

Do that, maybe I'll start watching again.

Hell... I'm just about had it with college football penalties too (frick YOU TARGETING!). But at least I can tolerate it to an extent.

Flex scheduling should be all season

Also eliminate Thursday night games. They are sloppy and raise injury numbers which dilute the product

It also helps alliviate bye week heavy game slates so it gives them more games on Sundays

I don't think I have ever seen one college football game that goes touchdown timeout kickoff timeout like the NFL does. The MSB grossly exaggerates this. Not saying a game doesn't take four hours, but the other is simply false.

Well said, most of their problems can be fixed pretty easily. Something must be done about all the PI calls.

Or they could fix the abortion clinic they call officiating.

It's insane. I still think back to that Tenn/A&M game that took 5 hours.

They're absolutely doing it. Not after every kick like the pros, but it's been happening lately. Watch close this weekend.

Fewer commercials and fewer PI penalties is what they need to do

Now we can get ads on jersey and electronic ads on fields to make up revenue

Two weeks ago, they actually removed all commercials from at least 2 games in the first quarter. I don't know if it had anything to do with the London game going into overtime or if it was a conscious experiment. Either way, the Saints/Seahawks game definitely did not have commercials in the first quarter. I believe someone on here said another game they watched didn't have commercials either. It was amazing. The first quarter took 25 minutes.

Regulation for that game took over 4 hours. That's fricking insane.
