But you shouldn't be carrying that baggage in 2014.

Who are you to say what "baggage" black people should and should not be carrying? That is the height of presumption on your part.

That stuff is in the past just like WWII, the Holocost, Revolutionary war, etc.

Bet you won't go up to a Jewish person and say something off color about the holocaust. I wouldn't.

Young white people today had nothing to do with any of that

No one's blaming young white people today. Least of all me. I married one of them, after all

quote:

Young white people are just as disgusted that people were treated like that in the past.

That's true.

That's also beside the point, though.

Who's to say he wouldn't have done the same to a young white teen?

Didn't say that. Way to put words in my mouth to further your lack of discussion, though

You're equating some black people being uncomfortable with whites/other races using the word to hating white people/other races.

You're mistaken.

I kind of see your rationale in this but its still different. I think you feel that we harbor hate for whites, but we just want to convey why we are sensitive to the word.

People who would get offended at a white person saying n**** in a non-racial context are obviously carrying baggage.

Look at Shari Sheppard get pissed off that Barbara Walters said n***** in the contexxt of a news story:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilrJCuQjs2k

She can't even explain why she doesn't like Barbara Walters to use the word.

And they are entitled to their opinion whether you like it or not.

And most black people can understand and have little problem with folks saying it in, say, an academic sense.

Your anecdote doesn't demonstrate much beyond the fact that Sheppard wasn't able to articulate that which we have been discussing in this thread off the cuff.

Us white people will always be evil.

She said "I don't like it when white people say it." Point blank.

Judging a person by their skin color.

No, judging what they say. Quite different.

No, judging strictly by skin color.

Barbara just repeated what Whoopi Goldberg said. Sherri said she had no problem with Whoopi saying it but was offended when Barbara said it because she's white, even though the word was not directed at anybody and she was just repeating it.

Did you watch the video?

She said to Barbara Walters (paraphrased) "Even if you said it right, I still wouldn't like it [because you are white]."

The reaction to the word is based solely on the speakers skin color. Put Barbara's voice in a black person's mouth and she reacts differently.

Which is still judging by what people say. There is a distinction to be made.

What you're implying is that because Sheppard had a problem with Barb saying it, Sheppard hates Barb. That's not the case.

Seen it several times Usually gets trotted out in these discussions as a strawman argument, tbh.
