The Fridge is struggling, in horrible shape, but he's happy

One of the best things about William “The Refrigerator” Perry, who took America by storm as a 300-plus pound rookie defensive tackle-turned-running back on the 1985 Bears, was his infectious smile. So maybe when he says he’s happy, we should all just be happy for him.
“I’m home,” Perry told Rick Telander of Sports Illustrated on a visit to Perry’s South Carolina home. “And I’m happy. I can’t say everything is peachy keen, but I’m still enjoying life. I love Chicago, but there’s no place like home.”
The picture Telander paints of Perry, however, is less than happy.
According to Sports Illustrated, Perry drinks too much, his weight has ballooned to somewhere in the range of 430 to 450 pounds, he rarely sees his four kids or his two ex-wives, he lives alone in a retirement facility, the money he made playing football is long gone, he has both physical and mental ailments, and his doctor says he’s taking pills he shouldn’t take and not taking the medication he needs to take.
Perry’s brother, former Pro Bowl defensive tackle Michael Dean Perry, was appointed by a judge to be William’s guardian and conservator because William was in such bad shape that he could no longer care for himself. Perry’s son Willie thinks his uncle Michael Dean isn’t caring for his dad and wants guardianship for himself, an accusation that Michael Dean says is false. The Fridge’s old coach Mike Ditka says he seems to have given up on life.
For his part, Perry says, simply, “I’m my own man,” and he doesn’t need anyone telling him how to live his life. Perry doesn’t sound interested in changing, even if the way he’s living now can’t last much longer.
And most importantly......

Is it too late to get the Fridge for this year's death pool? After reading that, I am sad to say that I don't see how he makes it much longer.

I've never understood ppl who feel they have a right to tell some grown man what he should be doing towards the end of his life.
Doesn't sound like anyone is getting hurt here other than the Fridge and IMO he has lived long enough to earn the right to go the way he wants

He's 53. I can't imagine living in a retirement facility at 53. If his football money is long gone, it doesn't seem like we are even talking about some really nice place either.

I think people that love you and would like for you to be around longer should try to help. He is 53 years old, not 90.
Other people that aren't part of your life - you are correct.

Was he not part of the class action lawsuit against the league?

well, some people are not mentally competent to make decisions in their best interest. sounds like that is the case here

Who do you think is paying for that retirement facility he lives in since his money is gone? Why should his shitty life choices give him the right to wither away on the government's dime?

One of the greatest wrongs in Super Bowl history was Ditka putting in Perry to score a late TD instead of letting Walter Payton have it.
I never understood why Ditka did that. Payton was the soul of the organization.

I'm not sure how he is happy given all of this, but all that matters is that he is. Good for him

Didn't read the article, but didn't he have Guillain Barre or transverse myelitis or something like that about 10 years ago?

The NFL’s pension plan is based on credited seasons. Players are fully vested and eligible for benefits once they have three credited seasons in the league, and can begin collecting at 55 years old. A player’s monthly benefit is based on the number of credited seasons they achieve, and the time period of said seasons. Players will receive $660 per credited season every month for the 2015-2017 seasons, and $760 per credited season every month for the 2018-2020 seasons.
The NFL’s 401(k) program, which is otherwise known as the Second Career Savings Plan, offers players a 2:1 match up to $26,000 once players have two credited seasons in the NFL.
The last retirement benefit available to NFL players is an annuity plan. Once players have four credited seasons, the league will contribute $80,000 per credited season from 2014-2017, and $95,000 per credited season from 2018-2020. Players can begin collecting this benefit once they reach 35-years-old.
