you can't expect the average fan to grasp the double switch and to know when you're supposed to shift the infield

that's basic addition and subtraction compared to the calculus of an NBA defense

and the fricking NFL is like discrete math or chaos theory

when was the last time you didn't see an NBA defense move (aka shift) during a possession? 1985?

the NFL sucks for analytics b/c of how much the game relies on the team concept

it's way too advanced for the average joe to really get into the onfield strategy, too.

i think it isn't as enjoyable because they've gotten too soft on the rules. Aggressive defense cannot be relied on as much anymore.

all of the drama like the Ray Rice thing and the constant rise of social media doesn't help either.

no one talks strategy anymore because they'd rather talk about shite that doesn't have anything to do with the goddamn game.

the PC bullshite with Goodell... the Redskins... Adrian Peterson... the Saints bounty bullshite.

frick all of that shite.

Problem is, baseball is too slow, not as easily played/related to by most fans (you can grab a football/basketball and play with four people if you really wanted to...base ball you need a bat, balls, glove and an organized group of people)

Oh the horror ! You have to do something besides run back and forth and not get passed the ball because you're white bread !

Once the older generation passes on, baseball's popularity will continue to decline.

Hmm. What a metaphysical point of view. Guess I didn't take into account the idea that even though old people die, the generation behind them always stays the same age and never matures nor has evolving interests or tastes.

For me, and most of the people I know, I really enjoy watching the Braves. As opposed to other sports like Football and Basketball where I can watch teams I have no personal interest in play, and enjoy the game.

May be due to the lack of emphasis that baseball has put on promoting its stars.

baseball fans do their sport no real justice when their auto response is "OUR GAME IS TOO COMPLEX FOR YOU IDIOTS!"

it's the auto-response to these discussion

this is just going to guarantee that fewer people moving forward will even try to give it a chance

And it's so foolish

Football defenses and elite basketball offenses are ridiculously complex, too

if the past 30 years have been any indication, as the newer generations age, they start to give less of a care about baseball

No, it's just the lack of caring among the mainstream media and average sports fan. Which I don't really find all that interesting of a dilemma. Hockey has lower viewership in the States as does Soccer but none of the MSB experts declare them "dying sports." It's just another catchy argument people like to jump on to when they're feeling some dissonance about the fact that they actually have nothing interesting to contribute.

i mean when the NBA was still in its down period, it was tough to argue NBA>MLB. but back in those days, the MLB people would argue with me until they were blue in the face bout how baseball was more complex than pro football

luckily that argument is all but dead

Social media has helped basketball alot. They embrace their stars, a lot knowledgeable writers use twitter and most are pretty funny, so many tremendous gifs.

I mean, I literally just watched a white dude get passed the ball and entrusted to take the potential game-winning shot against the defending champions not more than 3 hours ago

What's your prediction for the complete disintegration of Major League Baseball. 10 years? 30 years? Just want you to go on record re: when you predict baseball ceases to exist in America. TIA.

Jesus Christ, you guys are all biased as frick. You are just supporting your favorite sport.

Slow - "basketball is the best combo of team play, excitement, and analytics"

What the frick is this nonsense? The NFL is first in basically every statistic of "best" because it literally rapes all other league in terms of popularity. You can bend terms however you want, but this is a stupid fricking argument. I get your point. Your point just sucks.

Rohan - "basketball is full of thugs and low-attention fans"

Yawn. This tired argument is mostly used by Klan members and people who live to hate on the next generation.

hockey has been seen as dying for years and years. it is such a non factor i have no idea if it's crept out of its grave yet

and soccer is increasing in popularity. it's still a minor sport, but how can a sport experiencing massive growth be dying?

World Cup soccer drew more viewers in the USA than baseball. Now that's the ultimate indictment that a boring arse sport with redonculous diving draws way more viewers (or that's what I heard on the Jay Thoms show today so maybe that star is wrong)
