Nothing really noticeable on a run to first, turned around and could kind of see his face as something tightened up.

I dont really watch baseball so maybe someone can help me understand.
when the bases were loaded with no outs and the Rockies popped one up shallow why not let the ball hit the ground at the last second and then make the play at home then third? the runners were still on base, seems like a double play would be simple and possible to go for three. instead he just caught it.
do runners not have to run and just sacrifice the out at first?
