Honestly, frickwit & Dickmouth would have been an upgrade at QB for the Texans.

Update: Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins did not report to training camp. He now will be subject to fines of $40,000 for each day missed.

Can he go to training camp and just refuse to participate to avoid the fine? I have never understood why players don't just do that in these hold out situations...

Same thing with the hold out vs franchise tag deal... instead of holding out and not getting paid, just go to practice/games and literally refuse to go in if you really want to prove your point.

I think the goal is to avoid injury before signing the big deal.

Which is my point... refuse to practice/play but don't "hold out" where you aren't physically present.

LINK to what I am discussing

Basically I want to know why more players aren't doing this. Is it shitty? yes, but I think more often than not the players are on the right side of these contract negotiations.

I have yet to a hear a legit argument from the "he shouldn't hold out" camp. If the team expects one of the best WRs in the league to perform at a high level, then a contract should be renegotiated to pay the player what they deserve.

And Hopkins is a now 4th year player. Rarely does a player going into their 4th year gets an extension, it's always during their 5th year option (when talking 1st rounders)

its a sticky situation for sure. obviously, nuke is great and is outplaying his deal. problem is hes under contract for about $1.5M this year, an $8M team option for next year, and they can franchise him up to twice, the 2016 rate being $14.6M/yr for wr. inflating the 2018 WR franchise tag by 10% makes it a approximately $16M/yr. so the texans control his NFL eligibility in their eyes at a rate of $25.5 over the next 3 years with a "team option" to refranchise him in 2019 for approx $17M for a 4th year. they own him long term, and theres not much nuke can do to change this part of the equation.

hopkins deserves more money for sure, but with the long term security he wants, he needs to give somewhere, too. in this situation, a longer, team friendly contract is the compromise. but i'll bet hes also posturing saying he wants MAX WR money(of course he does, why wouldnt he?). the magic question is what type of extension and long term deal hes looking for. texans have shown they have paid and locked up key players, but they dont make XX player the highest paid at their position, even jj watt....

bottom line is hes great, he deserves a bigger contract, and the texans want to keep him around, but hes overplaying his little pocket of leverage hes holding at the moment. if he wants the long term security, it'll mean bending on high end number he'll surely want (im speculating)(and deserves if he can get someone to pay him)

I have a feeling that the team will end up winning. All the team has to do is wait him out until he runs out of money. (which won't take long)

Just assuming you're arguing for arguments sake because it's clear you're uniformed

Watt and Mercilus both got new deals after year 3. Both play for the Texans. That's called precedence.

I'm not commenting on this particular situation, but the NFL can't give guaranteed contracts. With their big rosters(compared to MLB and NBA), their hard cap, but most importantly the violent nature of the game, guaranteed contracts just aren't practical. You can't get tied up paying 1/3 of your cap to a few guys with serious injuries who can't contribute for long periods of time.

It sucks for the players, no,doubt, but it's the only thing that makes sense. They have to be able to cut whomever whenever. Now maybe the union can bargain for better insurance for injured players, say either a percentage of their current contact or maybe have an arbitrer rule on their value if healthy and they get a percentage of that. But it count count against a team's cap.

frickwit had it all going for him until he caved in at that Sugar Bowl.

Career hasn't been the same since that game.

And this is why if I'm advising a superior athlete, the NFL should always be last on your list of dreams.

Besides the violence and injuries, it's the pure business aspect of limited player rights and benefits that make it seem unfathomable.
