Was watching Wings-Preds earlier and I noticed that the coaches didn't seem to be doing much other than calling line changes and diagramming the occasional play. Seems like hockey players are a lot more "on their own" out on the ice than players in most sports are.

Dick Williams once claimed managers make the difference in baseball perhaps only 10% of the time. The % for football and basketball has got to be higher than that.

Thats WAY too high. If you had a decent HS coach and someone like Tony LaRussa managing a big league game it would make a difference in maybe one game a year.

Keep in mind I am talking about managing the game. Evaluating players, coaching, day to day operations, all of that shite is important but just deciding what to do in certain game situations is super easy.

In game it's baseball, especially in the AL. In the clubhouse managing personalities day to day and knowing when to go with a certain guy in the lineup is important and makes a difference imo. But as far as actual impact while in the middle of the game, baseball is the least and football is the most of the major sports I think.

I am assuming you mean does the least during the game right? not practice and stuff. The answer to that is any free flowing sport(Basketball Soccer Hockey etc)

The biggest difference a manager can make occurs after the ninth inning and before the first inning. It's mostly about managing personalities and egos and keeping players emotions in check when a team's in a slump and not doing so well. That's why Dusty Baker's actually a great manager because he's good at all those things even though he's a terrible gameday tactician.

Let me get this straight. Are you actually saying that a baseball coach does more than a basketball coach?

Basketball coaches install offensive systems; install defensive systems; make halftime adjustments; make in-game adjustments; draw up plays at the end of the game; make constant substitutions; work the refs; etc. etc.

Baseball managers sit in the dugout with a dip in their lip and a hand on their nutsack. The other hand is free to dial the bullpen when the starting pitcher starts to suck. I think that about covers it.

I mean, Jesus titty-fricking Christ I've heard a lot of dumb shite from VerlanderBEAST, but this takes the cake.

I'm fairly certain a highly trained orangutan would do a fine job of managing a baseball team.

Even VerlanderBEAST -- who is clearly clearly a ruh-tard -- could probably do an okay job as a baseball manager.

Can you read?

Also basketball drawing up plays is laughable. They are running plays they have run hundreds of times in practice.

Soccer is easily the answer.

Baseball managers at least can make decisions on when to pull pitchers, who to bring in, when to steal, etc. Soccer is go out on a field and run your arse off, I may throw a sub in after the game is half over.
