I'm a huge NBA guy, but this seasons been pretty boring. Durant going to the Warriors just killed the season for me.

Yea, most spurs fan don't watch basketball. It's just part of the city and they're winning. They just buy the gear and yell out GSG

That's what you get when your stars are bitches who want to take the easy route and make super teams. A few years ago the regular season was entertaining as hell. There were 8-9 good teams in the west and playoff seeding actually mattered. Now, nothing matters until at least the conference finals.

It has more to do with cable cutting, the sooner these cable companies feel the pain the sooner they'll go to an a la carte package where I wont have to pay $100+/month for a cable package to be 95% trash I dont watch like lifetime tv or investigation discovery

Stop all of the SJW propaganda and the ratings will increase.

Cleveland is also down 28%. The lack of parity is killing interest.

Simply put, many fanbases have been spoiled. They are spoiled to the point where they only watch the big games, which are on national broadcasts anyway, which still hurts local ratings when viewers tune in to ESPN or TNT.

I am a huge Spurs fan, but this year and last year were the first seasons that I recall where I felt there was a huge gap between SA and the top. Granted, a break here or there and the Spurs could win it all, but on paper, there's no reason to think that the team is better than GS.

Taking things a step further. The bottom of the league sucks more than usual. There's not a whole lot of interest in a game against the Bucks, Kings, Knicks, Lakers, Magic, Nets, Nuggets, Pistons, 76ers, Suns, Wolves, etc. Even traditional rivals like LA and Dallas aren't going to heighten the interest the way they are playing.

I'm also curious if this has something to do with the new faces on the roster.

I agree that the spurs aren't on GS's level. But the 'top' is only one team. It's clearly Golden State and then clearly San Antonio. Like you said, it might take a break or two, but spurs are contenders.

The Spurs still remain fourth in the league with an average rating of 5.11, trailing only Golden State, Cleveland (7.00, down 28 percent) and Oklahoma City (6.18, down 8 percent).

I still think the primary issue is parity. Any given year, you could think of maybe 7 or 8 teams with a title shot. This year, I think it's 3.

The Cavs's first 4 games went against the World Series, at the halfway point in the season that's 10% of the total games taking a massive ratings hit.

Pels about to jump!

What were the World Series game 7 ratings? MLB had to be creaming their pants.

And it must be the lack of parity on basic network TV that explains its ratings decrease.

The State of Traditional TV

Or maybe there have been some extraordinary changes occurring in content and access methods, which make trends in traditional TV ratings nearly uninterpretable?
quote:

It’s worth remembering that Q1 2016 marked the first time that streaming video services were in 50% of US TV households. That was up 8% points from just a year earlier. By contrast, DVR penetration had remained flat at 49-50% for the prior 6 quarters.
quote:

A survey from Deloitte finds 19-25-year-olds estimating that they spend 39% of their TV content time watching streaming video as opposed to 29% watching live programming, with streaming (31%) also ahead of live viewing (28%) among 26-32-year-olds;
So you can go to why the parity argument, the poliboard will go with the "America is fed up with athletes liberal views" argument, and I'll go with the unprecedented changes in content access due to streaming services.
