Not saying its a good idea or that it would work.

But couldn't anyone put together and event and call it the Olympics? Does the IOC legally own the name of an historical event?

For instance? What if Greece wanted to put on a traditional version without all the bullshite. Could they?

What is the point of this thread? Anyone can do anything they want, doesn't mean it will be successful.

Pretty sure the US Olympic Committee owns a trademark on the use of the Olympics in this country... other countries almost certainly do something similar. And there's the International Olympic Committee that might have a say in the matter.

The IOC owns the "Olympics" and actively protects that ownership. It has recently forced a pizza place in Philadelphia and a grocery store in Portland to remove the term from its name.

The IOC owns many copyrights and trademarks.

For example, you could not call your event "The Olympic Games" or anything like that.

The rings, the Olympic medley music, all that shite is copyright.

You could put on a sporting competition and use the word Olympics somewhere in it, but it would have to be very clear it was something distinct from the more famous games.

Per wiki

quote:

The Olympic Movement is very protective of its symbols; as many jurisdictions have given the movement exclusive rights to any interlocking arrangement of five rings, and usage of the word "Olympic". They have taken action against numerous groups alleged to have violated this trademark, including the Gay Games; the Minneapolis-based band The Hopefuls, formerly The Olympic Hopefuls; Redneck Olympics or Redneck Games; Awana Clubs International, a Christian youth ministry who used the term for its competitive games; and Wizards of the Coast, publisher at the time of the IOC's complaint of the card game Legend of the Five Rings. But a few companies have been successful in using the Olympic name, such as Olympic Paint, which even has a paintbrush in the form of a torch as its logo, and the former Greek airline Olympic Airlines.

The fact that most sports that we watch are accociated with professional leagues...making it impossible for the athletes to participate in something like this.
