i would think gretzky or phelps ... though i've never seen a listing of boxers that didn't have robinson as the greatest ... golf/tennis/basketball/baseball/football all have debatable choices, though jordan or nicklaus might be the least debatable among those ... don't know enough about the other ones listed in tangerine's thread ...

Gretzky is the clear answer.

Jordan right behind him.

I feel Nicklaus is very debtable, Tiger was miraculous and still isn't finished, but let's not debate if he come back. Has been beaten to death in a million threads lately.

Baseball is probably the toughest off the top of my head.

Mario Lemieux's points per game are comparable to Gretzky's (Lemieux 1.88 PPG, Gretzky 1.92 PPG), but Gretzky still has over 1000 more points than Lemieux.

IMO, it's pretty clearly Gretzky.

If Gretzky never scored a goal, he would still hold the record for points in the NHL. Despite that, he still has the record for goals.

Jordan is the GOAT, but there are players way closer than there are to Gretzky

Longevity is always part of the equation for all GOAT in any sport.

To me that means more than dominance for x amount of years. For Golf, Bobby Jones and Tiger were dominant and debatable who was more dominant. But Jack is GOAT by his majors overall records.

Eras are factors too especially for Tennis, Golf, Nascar.

Take tennis, Rod Laver is the GOAT and he was denied 7 years(or 8) of playing in majors. The Open era changed things, then technology changed it again.

i don't know hockey, but i'd assume there's been little tech change in it over the years ... certainly not to the extent of golf or tennis ... and baseball has changed the mound, seen different styles of parks built, and ignored the steroids issue ... basketball hasn't changed that much either ... there are too many players in both baseball and football to make a clear-cut top pick ...

Aleksandr Karelin in Greco-Roman wrestling. Went on a 13 year undefeated streak before Rulon Gardner beat him in the 2000 Olympics.

Disagree.

We're talking about the greatest of all time...

Not the guy who was very good for the longest amount of time.

Certainly, someone has to be good for some length of time to be considered the greatest. But I don't think someone needs to play at a high level for 20 years to be considered the greatest.

Do people actually argue against Federer as GOAT at this point? He seems solid at that spot IMO.

Well if you are talking longevity Serena Williams won two of those "wrap around the end of the year" Grand Slams 13 years apart, including the last 4, at 35, when most people in female tennis flame out by 30.

Hell, Tiger fricking Woods hasn't won a major since age 33 and people are constantly figuratively sucking him off and male golfers have won a lot more older majors than female tennis players.

As if marketing is the only reason he's considered GOAT.
