So this would be the 8-team playoff, right?

1) Alabama
8) Southern Cal

4) Washington
5) Michigan

3) Ohio State
6) Penn State

2) Clemson
7) Oklahoma

Penn State might be 5 and Michigan might be 6. Or Ohio State might be 2 and Clemson might be 3. Either way, sign me up for that shite.

That would be so much fun to watch.

7 amazing games matching up teams that don't play each other very often.

They'd probably juggle it around to avoid some of those rematches in the first round, but it would be so awesome

Yeah. Would be tough to avoid rematches in the 2/7 and 3/6 games either way.

Ohio State at 2 would rematch with Oklahoma at 7. At 3 they'd rematch with Penn State. If you put Michigan at 6 they could also rematch with them.

Clemson at 2 would rematch with Oklahoma from last year's playoff game.

I guess you could put Southern Cal at 7 to avoid that.

This statement right here is why Ohio State should be a lock for the playoff. They fricking played everyone.

what's the point of an 8 team playoff when the second round would end up consisting of the top 4 ranked teams anyway

It would most likely end this whole "conference champions" debate.

All 5 conference champs would be in this year. Of course, that wouldn't always happen, but there's a decent chance it would happen most years.

It would have happened the last three years, at least.

Michigan, Penn State and Oklahoma could all win their 1st round games in this scenario.

1) Alabama
8) Southern Cal

4) Washington
5) Michigan

3) Ohio State
6) Penn State

2) Clemson
7) Oklahoma

Wisconsin should be the 8 instead of SC.

Yeah if conference championship games are going to be a thing they need to have meaning

No way in hell all 5 champs wouldn't be in the top 8 unless major shenanigans.

You could probably have left Florida out if they had upset Bama today

I mean it's certainly possible. Va Tech had a chance to beat Clemson tonight. They wouldn't have gotten in the top 8 even if they would have beaten Clemson.

In 8 team scenario, how do you treat conference championship game losers? Take this hypothetical where we have USC over Wisconsin, for example. Why? USC truly being rewarded for not making conference title game

They're 15 now, if they had beaten the #1 the definitely would have gone into the top 8.

Give me that discussion over what we currently have. Eliminates so many problems and only really creates small ones imo.

Yeah honestly didn't realize they were 15th until they just said it on SC. Mizzou last year would probably be a better example.

I personally think they should just auto-bid P5 conference winners just reflect an upset in the rankings.

What happens when two highly rated or undefeated teams meet in a conference championship game or 12th game? End of season rivalries and conference championship games would both be devalued in an 8 team playoff. The end of the regular season would be far less important than it is today.
